The Bellefonte Red Raiders caged the Bald Eagle Area Eagles during last night’s game at the new Rodgers Stadium. Community members gathered in the cold rain, and filled the bleachers with red and white as they cheered on the boys throughout the game. With a 10-9 win, Bellefonte renewed their rivalry team.
In the first quarter, the game quickly revealed to be two well-matched teams, both hungry to take home the first rivalry win on the new field. Both teams were challenged by their opponents, and had some difficulty consistently advancing on the field. This changed for Bellefonte when running back Mason Grey ran for a 31-yard rushing touchdown. Kicker Chris Persiko tacked on the PAT, and Bellefonte lead the game 7-0 with a few minutes left in the first quarter. The Eagles did not let this stop them, and answered when quarterback Jaden Jones completed a 85-yard pass to wide receiver Nick Turner for a touchdown. However, this was not enough for the Eagles to get ahead in the first quarter, as kicker Peter Vancise failed to add on the extra point. Bellefonte ended the first quarter with a 7-6 lead.
The Raiders took control of the ball during the second quarter when the Eagles turned their possession over on downs. The team began to progress on the field, until the Eagle’s tight end Nathan Hoover intercepted a Bellefonte pass on the Bellefonte 45-yard line. The game proved to be filled with strong defense from both teams, as the Raiders and the Eagles were held scoreless throughout the second and third quarter.
Bellefonte started the fourth with control of the ball, however quickly turned their possession over on downs. The Eagles quickly gained on this, and shortly after progressed to Bellefonte’s 20-yard line. With less than 4 minutes left in the game, the Eagles kicked a field goal and lead 9-7. Myers threw a long pass to wide receiver Ryan Smith, and Bellefonte carried the game away from this play. Bellefonte entered Bald Eagle’s 20-yard line with less than 2 minutes left in the fourth, and Persiko tacked on the 3 extra points needed to win the game with only a few seconds left.
Bellefonte finished the game with a 10-9 lead over their rivalry team, and took home the first ever win on their brand new home turf.
