WINGATE – Bellefonte prides itself on being a physical football team and tailback CJ Funk prides himself on being a physical back. And on this night they were too much for Tyrone as the Raiders posted a 31-14 win over the Golden Eagles in a battle of unbeaten.

Funk ran the ball 19 times for 205 yards to pace the Raider offense as it scored 17 unanswered second half points to take a share of the Mountain League lead. Tyrone jumped out to an early lead as Denver Light hit Tommy Hicks from 10 yards out for a touchdown with 5:43 showing on the clock and Keegan Raabe booted the PAT.

Bellefonte answered when Kyle Myers connected with Trae Bauman for a 24-yard strike and Dan Persiko tied it up with the PAT kick on the first play of the second quarter. But Tyrone got that back when Zac Albright scored from 37 yards out on a fourth-and-one call. Raabe put the Golden Eagles back into the lead with 7:56 left in the half.

Bellefonte got the ball to start the second half and on the first play from scrimmage Funk broke loose on an off tackle play and went 71 yard and Persiko knotted the score with his PAT at the 11:11 mark. “CJ takes pride in being a big, powerful kid,’’ said Raiders coach Shannon Manning. ‘He’s not a scatback type.’’

The Raiders took control of the game in the third quarter when Myers hit Noah Badger from the 11 and Persiko made it 21-14 with 10:08 left. Bellefonte got their last TD when Myers scored with the 3 and Persiko booted a 22-yard field goal to finish the scoring.

“ We didn’t jimp on the kids at halftime,’’Manning said. “We just made a few little tweaks on some things. What we wanted to do was to push hard into the fourth quarter. We pride ourselves on being an extremely physical team, the kind that when you walk off the field after the game you say you are glad you only have

to play us once a year.,’’
