Tonight’s matchup against the Penns Valley Rams and Central Scarlet Dragons came down to the wire. It was an exciting, but nerve-racking finish for fans. In the final six minutes of the game there was three touchdowns scored with two of them being in the last two minutes. A big part of this game was the defensive side of the ball and big plays, along with numerous penalty calls that brought back multiple scoring opportunities. Penns Valley’s quarterback Aaron Tobias led the Rams attack. He finished with 214 yards passing with two touchdowns, along with 64 yards on the ground. This all started in the first quarter on Penns Valley’s first drive. They drove right down the field and into Central territory but ultimately failed to reach the endzone. Central couldn’t get any yards so they were forced to punt deep in their side of the field. Penns Valley almost turned this into points as wide receiver Austin Fisher raced down the sideline 40 yards off a screen, Unfortunately it was brought back due to a block in the back penalty. The drive ended with a three and out, with Tobias punting putting the ball inside the Central 10 yard line. On third down Austin Fisher had a huge sack putting the Dragons on their own 1 yard line. The Dragons punted the ball to the speedy Ryan Ripka in which he dragged the ball down inside the twenty. Two plays layer Tobias found Ryan Ripka on a 14 yard pass for the first score of the night. Penns Valley kicker Gage Ripka made the point after to make it 7-0 Penns Valley. The Dragons had a chance to even up the score when they added a trick play that ended up gaining over 50 yards. However, this was again brought back due to a penalty on Central.
To start the second quarter the Dragons ended up punting the ball back to the Rams. The Rams drove right down the field until they came up to a fourth down and were forced to give the ball back to the Dragons. Tobias’s punt landed inside the Central 10 in which this was the third time they started with the ball deep inside their end of the field. The ball was finally starting to move for the Dragon offense. Until a fumble gave the ball to the Rams at the Central 40 with 8:06 left in the second quarter. The Rams still can’t find a way to reach the endzone resulting in another Tobias punt which again lands at the Central 12 yard line. Finally the Dragons got the spark they were looking for. Quarterback Braden Kitt found Casey Walters for an 88 yard touchdown. The point after was good tying the game 7-7. The rest of the second quarter was a fight between the two defensive lines for the line of scrimmage. No points were scored however, Central was close with 39 seconds left on the clock, Kitt found Zack Parks for a long td pass but was called back due to a penalty. The second half of this game was very back and fourth between the two teams. The scoring began with 8:44 left in the third quarter when Tobias hit Logan Snyder for the 30 yard touchdown. Gage Ripka’s kick was good making the score 14-7 Penns Valley. Snyder finished the game with 6 catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. The next drive Kitt found Zach Parks for a 60 yard throw and catch bringing the dragons to the 4 yard line. Penns Valley wasn’t giving up very easily in this game, they came up with a huge fourth down stop on the Dragon’s 1 yard line. This was a key moment in the game though because when Penns Valley took over they could not move the ball forcing a punt. The snap was low and this caused Tobias to drop a knee to pick the ball up, resulting in a safety. This made the game 14-9 Penns Valley with 3:08 left in the third quarter. This was a huge momentum shift in favor of the Central Dragons. They got the ball back on the short kickoff and sent there offense out for a new drive. But when everything was going good there was another turnover in which Penns Valley recovered with 2:22 left in the third quarter. A few plays later Ryan Ripka took the ball 5 yards into the endzone to try and extend the lead. The point after was good making the score 21-9 Penns Valley. The first play of the Dragons following drive Kitt found Parks for the 49 yard touchdown, and just like that the score was 24-15 Penns Valley. The extra point was missed and this left 6:57 left in the game. Penns Valley drove down the field on the following drive and this was key to their victory. It was fourth down inside the red-zone and kicker Gage Ripka came in to kick a 22 yard field goal. It was a perfect kick in a pivotal part of the game. This made the score 24-15 with 6:57 left to go. Central took over on offense and within a couple of plays they responded. Kitt and Ben McCanahy connected for a 56 yard touchdown. The two point conversion was good making it 24-23 Penns Valley.
