Through the first half of this season, Aaron Tutino had been having a pretty good season. Friday night against Purchase Line, Tutino took his season from pretty good to unbelievable. He pulled in 12 passes for 285 yards and 5 touchdowns, all single game records for the Ligonier Valley football program. On the other end of those passes, John Caldwell had himself a pretty good night as well, completing 20 of 23 passes for 402 yards and 7 scores. The yardage and touchdown passes are also school records for a single game.
The Rams took the opening kickoff and drove for a score. A couple of Caldwell to Tutino passes set up a 31 yard touchdown run by Kyrie Miller. Tackle Blake Bridge ran for the 2 point conversion off of a lateral.
The Red Dragons answered back on a long touchdown pass from Jacob Barnett to Josh Syster. The conversion failed and it was 8-6 halfway through the first quarter. The Rams would add another Miller score from 1 yard out to set the score at 14-6 after 1.
The second quarter would prove to be the decisive frame. The Rams exploded for 40 points against only 6 for Purchase Line. Tutino and Caldwell would connect for 5 touchdowns in that quarter alone. John Beard would also pull in his first varsity touchdown on a 12 yard pass from Caldwell. Cullen Goncher scored for Purchase Line as well to make it 54-12 at halftime.
After the Rams Homecoming ceremonies at halftime, Sam Sheeder caught a TD for Ligonier and Miles Higgins would get his first varsity touchdown with a 6 yard run. Jayce Brooks got the final score for the Red Dragons followed by a Brady Syster conversion run.
The Rams offensive line had an outstanding game. Blake Bridge, Mike Petrof, Jude Grzywinski, Alex Torrance, Gabe Gonda and Christian Jablonski kept Caldwell clean all night to allow he and Tutino the time to connect. They also opened holes in the ground game for the Rams. Kyrie Miller led the rushing attack with 68 yards on 10 carries with 2 scores.
Zach Beitel had an interception for Ligonier Valley. Sam Sheeder had a forced fumble which he recovered and had two tackles for a loss for the Rams D. Bridge had two tackles for a loss and a QB pressure. Ayden Kelley led the defense with 6 tackles.’
The Rams travel to meet a much improved Marion Center team Friday at 7 while Purchase Line will welcome Penns Manor also Friday at 7.
