It was the kind of game every coach dreads, one where his team is a prohibitive favorite but the opponent doesn’t know that. Philipsburg-Osceola wasn’t buying into that line of thinking Friday night when unbeaten Tyrone came to town to take on the winless Mounties. Midway through the second quarter there were the Mounties, holding a 14-6 lead and sniffing the heady air that comes with an upset But that the Golden Eagles snapped out of their funk and went on to post a 32-14 win thanks to a three-touchdown outburst in the final six minutes of the first half.
“”This was one of those trap games,’’ said Tyrone coach Jason Wilson. “We tell the kids not to look at anyone’s record but that might have been what they were doing. We were able to regain our focus in the second quarter. That was the one quarter where we played good football tonight. Overall I don’ think we were able to get into a rhythm.’’ The Golden Eagles took a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter when quarterback Denver Light scrambled out from under a rush and scored from 22 yards out. The PAT kick was blocked, leaving the score at 6-0 at the 2:26 mark.
On the second snap of the second quarter P-O took the lead when Bubba Slogosky, who alternated with Ryan Whitehead at quarterback, hooked up with TJ Thompson from the 3 and Aaron Parks kicked the extra point to put the Mounties on top, 7-6 with 11:31 left in the half. The Mountie defense bowed its neck and forced a three-and-out on Tyrone’s next possession and got the ball on its own 36. Whitehead connected with Nick Keith for 42 yards to put the ball on the Tyrone 19 and on the next play he rolled left and found Keith in the end zone at the 9:22 mark. Parks made it 14-6 and the Mountie fans smelled an upset, but the Golden Eagles spoiled that notion.
They took the kickoff and marched 57 yards to the P-O 26 where Light hit Cory Lehman at the 6:34 mark to get the Golden Eagles within two, 14-12. The try for the two-point conversion failed. Then the Tyrone defense went on the attack, sacking Whitehead twice for minus 15 yards on P-O’s next possession and forcing a short punt. Taking the ball on the P-O 35t, Tyrone drove to the P-O 10 and Zac Albright went straight up the middle for the score. Brandon Lucas ran for the PAT to put he Golden Eagles ahead for good, 20-12 with2:34 to go in the half.
Tyrone’s defense sacked Whitehead twice for minus 16 yards on P-O’s next two snaps and on the third Gripp picked off a tipped pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown to make it 26-14 with 1:18 left in the half. “We have a young quarterback and he just got jitterey,’’ P-O coach Brian McGonigal said of Whitehead’s inability to escape the heavy rush. “We just don’t have that killer instinct yet,’’ said McGonigal.
“ We had our foot on them and didn’t finish them off. You could see it. On defense, we were taking a step back instead of attacking. We could have gone in at halftime up 21-6.’’ “That interception return was a big momentum boost for us, “Wilson said. Tyrone scored the first time it had the ball in the second half, driving 69 yards, helped by a pair of pass interference penalties. Albright finished the drive by scoring from the 6 with 5:22 left in the half. The PAT kick failed, leaving the score at 32-16.
“Coming into the game I thought we matched up pretty well with them,’’ McGonigal said. I thought we played well, just not well enough.”
