A week ago Beaver fell a few points short of earning a home game. They didn’t and found themselves playing Belle Vernon on the road.
Belle Vernon got off to a good start. Their first drive resulted in a touchdown when Nolan Labuda connected with Anthony Bertram for a 38 yard touchdown.
Beaver got the ball and didn’t do anything with it going 3 and out. Belle Vernon got good field position starting at their own 49. This drive had a ton of penalties but Belle Vernon wouldn’t be denied. It was 3rd and very long and Nolan Labuda connected with Hunter Ruokonen down to the Beaver 18 yard line for a first down. A few plays later Labuda scored on a 1 yard run. That made it 14-0 Belle Vernon with 1:10 left in the first quarter.
Beaver got the ball back and again went 3 and out. On the punt a momentum changer occurred when Nolan Labuda fumbled it and Mason Rose picked it up and scored a 51 yard touchdown. The extra point was botched but somehow a pass was completed for 2 which made the score 14-8.
After a couple of plays on the following Belle Vernon drive, Nolan Labuda threw an interception and all of a sudden Beaver had momentum and a golden opportunity starting at the Belle Vernon 36. After a couple of plays Brodie List ran the ball down the 11 yard line. After that Belle Vernon’s defense stood strong and held Beaver to a field goal making it 14-11. “If you look at the points on the board we really facilitated them, it wasn’t necessarily on the defense” said Coach Humbert.
Belle Vernon needed a momentum change and they got just that on the next drive. After a run they were in Beaver territory at the 43. Eventually they got on the board when Andrew Pacak completed a pass to Nolan Labuda for a 27 yard touchdown. That made it 21-11 Belle Vernon.
Belle Vernon was switching up Quarterbacks throughout the game and both had good success. “You had both of them throw touchdowns, you had both of them run the ball, you had both of them execute the offense, it’s huge” said Coach Humbert.
The next drive Beaver had a good drive going they were inside the Belle Vernon 30. After a first down run the ball was fumbled and Belle Vernon recovered.
The real dagger was when Andrew Pacak connected with Hunter Ruokonen for a 33 yard touchdown. That made it 28-11 at half.
The rest of the game was more of the same. Beaver had one drive going and that was also inside the Belle Vernon 30, but the ball was intercepted on that drive.
One score occurred in the third quarter which was a 2 yard run by Nolan Labuda. Labuda had a big night. He ran for 2 touchdowns, he passed for a touchdown and he had a receiving touchdown. And if that’s not enough he also had an interception on defense. “The kid probably never viewed that he was going to start a playoff game at quarterback, he’s a product of what we have here.” said Coach Humbert.
Belle Vernon added 2 more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the final 49-11. Hunter Ruokonen also had a good night who had 6 catches for 111 yards. Next week Belle Vernon will play South Fayette with a trip to Heinz Field on the line. The game will be played at a site to be determined.
