South burns North in Lezzer Lumber slugfest

Any fireman will tell you a good fireplug is key to putting out a fire.  South squad coach John Franco from Tyrone will tell you a good fireplug can also put out any defense. “He’s a great player. I’ve been coaching against him for 3 years and couldn’t wait to be on the same team as him” he said of Central running back Lucas Runk.  Runk did just about everything he could to help the South to a 35-14 win at Alumni Stadium in Wingate.  In addition to 3 touchdowns, the St. Francis recruit had 65 rushing yards, 34 yards receiving and to complete the trifecta also had 22 yards passing.

The South team took possession first and wasted no time in running the score up. Using a steady diet of Runk they took the ball to the North 23 yard line where, on 4th and 3 Chad Barton (Hollidaysburg) hit Dan Wheeler for a score. 3 plays later DeRon Lee of Altoona intercepted Tyler Jennys pass ,one of 6 North turnovers, at the South 20 yard line.  The South drove immediately to paydirt on the back on Runk. This drive was capped by a 10 yard pass to Runk from Barton. The highlight of the drive was an option pass from Runk to Central teammate Eric Keefer who made a great comeback adjustment on the play. Jared Minori of Bellewood Antis also had a nice 21 yard catch in the drive.

The North squad then drove 66 yards to make the score 14-6 following a failed pat. The drive seemed to end on the South 35 yard line but a rugby style punt was fumbled by the south and the North recovered. They then drove to the 1 where on 4th down Tyler Jenny crossed the goal line.

“Turnovers really killed us tonite”.   North Coach Tim Janocko of Clearfield was hoping for more big plays but his squad was definitely on the short end of that wish. The half ended on a turnover by the North.

Two plays into the second half the turnover bug would rear it’s ugly head again for the North.  Nick Shrift of Hollidaysburg, who had a fumble recovery and interception, pounced on a Jenny miscue at the North 25. Barton the connected with Keefer for an 8 yard td to make the score 21-6.

DeRon Lee, who had 2 interceptions and a fumbled recovery, ended the next North drive with a 42 yard interception return. Runk scored from 17 yards. He also scored again with 3:24 remaining to close out his stellar high school career.

“I’m just glad to walk away with a win, I can leave the field with my head up” said Runk.
