The Richland Rams (2-4) had their way with the Somerset Golden Eagles (0-6) defeating them 43-14 at Somerset.
The Rams were given a golden opportunity to break the game wide open at the beginning with a botched kickoff return by the Golden Eagles. Senior Kicker Greg Sichak kicked the opening kickoff near the sideline which stayed in bounds after a wild bounce and the Rams would recover the ball around the 13-yard line.
It looked as though the Golden Eagles would stop this drive though as they had the Rams going on a three-and-out where it looked as though they would have to settle for a field goal. The Rams went for it on a long fourth down. Senior Quarterback Jordan Cinko would throw a floating pass to the back of the end zone that would be juggled and hauled in by Senior Running Back Alex Walton for a ten-yard Ram touchdown to put them up 7-0 with 9:59 with left in the first quarter.
Richland was just getting warmed up. The ensuing Somerset drive would end with a punt. The Rams would start around midfield. The nine play drive would end with Junior Running Back John Rizzo punching in a score from six yards extending the lead to 14-0 with 4:11 remaining.
Again, Richland would retain the ball after stopping the Golden Eagles, who would punt the ball away. After driving down the field Walton would cap off another nine play drive with a six-yard run of his own to put the Rams up 21-0 with 9:43 left in the half.
After stopping another Somerset drive that would see the Golden Eagles be stopped on a fourth down conversion the Rams would take control. Four plays later Cinko would hook up with Freshman Wide out Kyle Flick for a 49-yard reception. The Rams would then add on two points after a busted field goal turns into a pass to Senior Tight End John Klinar giving them a 29-0 lead with 5:26 left in the half.
Junior DB/SE Luke Rozich would have two successful plays that would give the Rams a bigger lead. First would be an interception that would set the Rams up at the Golden Eagle 40-yard line. A couple plays later Rozich would run an end around for 24-yard touchdown, putting them up 36-0 with 3:20 left.
After one last Somerset stall on the Ram 26-yard line the Golden Eagles would turn the ball over. This would lead to the Rams final score for the game and Cinko would hook up with Rizzo on a 74-yard screen pass that would give the Rams a 43-0 lead with 0:43 left in the half.
The Rams would have a running clock through the second half and go half way through the third quarter with their starters. It would also see the Rams go only their first drive in the game where they would not score. The Golden Eagles on the other hand would finally get put on the board after the start of the fourth quarter.
Senior Halfback Philip Ickes would get the first strike. Ickes would burst for a 39-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter making the score 43-7 with 9:40 left in the game.
After a Rams turnover the Golden Eagles would give it one more shot. They would get their second and final score of the game on the legs of Sophomore Running Back Tanner Sarver to make the score 43-14 with 4:43 left, giving the game its final score.
The Rams will host the Westmont Hilltop (1-6) at Herlinger Field next Friday. The Hilltoppers are coming off a loss to the Bishop McCort Crushers 34-0 at home Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile the Golden Eagles will be traveling to Bedford (2-4) to take on the Bison’s. The Bison’s are coming off a big loss to the Great Johnstown Trojans 35-8.
