Pitt is it.
Hopewell senior running back Rushel Shell issued an oral declaration to the University of Pittsburgh Friday morning, according to national recruiting service Scout.com. Shell chose Pitt over Alabama and held numerous scholarship offers from programs all across the country.
Shell is rated as a five-star prospect by Scout.com and ranked as the #4 running back in the nation for the 2012 recruiting class. Scout ranked six running backs – including two from Texas and one from Florida – as five-star prospects in the 2012 class. There is a second five-star prospect from Pennsylvania in the 2012 recruiting class – Noah Spence, a 6’3, 240-pound defensive end from Bishop McDevitt High School.
Through five games of his senior season, Shell has run for 1,061 yards and 12 touchdowns. He established himself as the WPIAL’s career rushing yardage leader against Mt. Lebanon in the fourth week of the season and presently has 7,827 career rushing yards. He ran for more than 2,500 yards in each of his sophomore and junior seasons.
Hopewell is 4-2 overall in 2011, with the two losses coming in consecutive weeks to Blackhawk and New Castle. A third loss would likely damage Hopewell’s hopes of a WPIAL AAA playoff berth.
