Gators Chomp Wildcats 49-0

MONROEVILLE, Pa. – It was Thursday night football action from Monroeville as Ray Ritz lead his Latrobe Wildcats (1-1) into Gator country for his first conference game as coach of a quad-“A” squad. Ritz would face another very successful coach across the field from him as Terry Smith lead his Gateway Gators (2-0) into Walter “Pete” Antimarino Stadium for their first home contest of 2009.

It was Gateway who took advantage of the home crowd getting on the board quickly and consistently. The first score came at the 8:46 mark of the first quarter when Demond Haynes finished off a 9 play 55 yard drive pounding it in from 2-yards out.

The Gators would add their second of five scores in the first half alone, on a 60 yard punt return by Brendon Felder, that gave the Gators a 14-0 lead.

The Gators took a 35-0 lead into the halftime break, a break that was much needed by the Wildcasts of Latrobe who were out gained by Gateway 338-111 on the ground alone.

What was the FSN Pittsburgh game of the week, turned out to be more of a one-sided affair. FSN will broadcast one game every Thursday night between local WPIAL teams for the rest of the season. It’s not liking we couldn’t see this coming; Latrobe hasn’t scored a single point vs. the Gators since 2002, and haven’t beat them since 2001.

Orne Bey enjoyed the FSN spotlight rushing for 122 and two scores. Also reaching pay dirt twice was Brendon Felder, taking the punt return back from 60-yards out, and scampered another in from 36.

The Gators four year starter at quarterback Rob Kalkstein went 7 of 9 for 115 yards and threw one touchdown. Gateway scored on all but one offensive possession in the first half, while Latrobe struggled on both sides of the ball even coming away with nothing after having a first and goal from the two.

Both teams seem to have a short memory of tonight’s game, for different reasons. Terry Smith already is looking to next week vs. Penn Trafford (0-2) who plays Hempfield (0-2) tonight.

“We aren’t going to get to confident about this win, this is the first conference win, and we need to keep up our momentum.” Smith said after the 49-0 “W”.

As for Latrobe, they want to put this game in the past and get ready for the rest of their conference play and look for a spot in the post season. That quest will continue next Friday night

Next week’s Thursday night game will have Jim Render and his Upper St. Clair Panthers (2-0) (Playing North Allegheny (2-0) tonight) taking on Terry Totten and the Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings (2-0) (Playing Mt. Lebanon (1-1) on Saturday).
