TYRONE – Quarterback Steve Franco completed 11 of 15 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns. Wide-out Nick Patton caught three touchdown passes among his seven catches for 165 yards as Tyrone built a 36-0 halftime lead en route to a 36-13 victory over Bellwood-Antis.
This year’s edition of the Backyard Brawl trophy went back to Tyrone in the season opener at Gray Veterans’ Memorial Field Friday night.
Tyrone coach John Franco said, “I was pleased with our passing game. Our passing game opened up our running game, and our offense really clicked pretty well.”
Patton showed off his speed in the first half. He grabbed a 26-yard Franco scoring pass across the middle of the field on Tyrone’s first offensive possession.
Tyrone’s second touchdown of the game, an 80-yard punt return by senior Derrick Emigh with 2:43 remaining in the first quarter. Tyrone led 13-0.
Tyrone also got a 1-yard touchdown from Christian Getz in the second quarter and a 26-yard field goal from Templeton in the second quarter. Tyrone led 36-0 at halftime.
Patton caught a 23-yard Franco scoring pass with 20 seconds left in the first half. His 58-yard touchdown with 6:43 remaining in the second quarter was very impressive, ripping the ball out of the defenders hands and racing to the end zone.
Patton said, “We both pretty much caught it at the same time, but I was able to get a better grip on it and rip it out. I was just lucky.”
Bellwood-Antis scored both of its touchdowns in the second half.
Anthony DeGol returned a Tyrone punt 90 yards for the first score as time elapsed in the third quarter. Fullback Tyler Beech scored on a 3-yard run with 1:38 remaining in the game.
