Hunter Merritt didn’t get to do what most quarterbacks have the privilege of doing, stepping into an already tested team. He had to lead a team into the future. With three communities coming together as one team just 4 short years ago, Hunter had to be a leader.

Starting as a quarterback in his Sophomore year, he did just that. And in his Junior year he helped lead the Eagles to the their biggest win in the schools short history, a 14-7 D10 AAA title over powerhouse Erie Cathedral Prep before losing in the state quarterfinals. He threw for 1,076 yards and 14 touchdowns, and he ran for 1,663 yards and 28 touchdowns on 201 carries that year.

In his senior season, he not only matched but surpassed those numbers even while playing in one less game after losing to Prep in the title game this year. Hunter threw for 2,327 yards and 34 td’s, and he ran for another 1,532 yards scoring 31 times. Hunter is our only THREE time Offensive Player of the week, and deservedly earned this final recognition.

Q&A with Head Coach Pat Gould

What stood out to you this year with Hunter:

With Hunter, leadership stood out, the way he came in and pushed other kids to get in it. His ability to lead was key. His control of the offense, he was in command. His work ethic, he’s just a hard worker. It was an absolute pleasure to coach someone like him.

What impact did Hunter have on the school/community:

This is our 4th year as a school, merging 3 different towns together, Conneautville, Conneaut Lake and Linesville, and this is the first senior class to come through. His efforts going into the senior year made the community tighter. It gave the school tons of spirit, something all three towns/school communities needed to come together. He helped bring the communities together as a whole

Hunters final career stats are AMAZING!::

Yeah, in addition to those passing and rusing career touchdown numbers, I understand he has 4 receiving TD and 1 defensive TD on an interception return his senior season.

I think he may be third all-time in combined passing and rushing yards in PIAA history. The best player not known about anywhere outside of Pennsylvania.

  2. Mike S says:

Absolutely deserving choice. Responsible for 42 TDs rushing and passing as a junior and upped his game big-time as a senior with have 65 tds combined for 2015. No one else is close. More than 10,000 combined rushing/passing for his career which makes him not just one of the all-time D10 players, but one of the all-time greats for for the entire State of Pennsylvania. And he’s also a great free safety on the defensive side of the ball, which is hardly ever mentioned.
