2017 PIAA Class 2A Title Game Preview: Wilmington (10) 14-0

Written by: on Thursday, December 7th, 2017

Head Coach: Terry Verrelli

How they got here:

2017 Schedule and Results:

The Wilmington Greyhounds opened the year ranked second in the WesternPAFootball.net rankings and was only there a few weeks. With a 35-0 win over Sharpsville, the Greyhounds moved up to the #1 slot and haven’t wavered. They come into the Title game averaging 42 points per contest while giving up just 7.5 per game. A week seven 14-6 win over a strong Greenville team was their only challenge of the year. They use a speedy tandem of running backs that have given the Greyhounds nearly 300 yards per game on the ground. Bryson Verrelli (1,083 yds) and Jack Patton (1,211 yds) lead the way for Wilmington.

But when they need him to, quarterback Robert Pontius can throw. He has 858 yards on a 49-89 effort, getting 10 tds to 6 interceptions.

Defensivly Jack Patton leads the way from his linebacker spot, garnering 83 tackles. Linebacker Cam Marett has 58 tackles. This team isn’t large by any measure, but they have incredible speed all over the field.

Coaches comments:

What would it mean for Wilmington to win the game:

This win would be monumental for our team, program and community. You don’t often have this opportunity

Keys to winning the game on offense:

We have to be able to run the ball effectively. They (Southern Columbia) play man to man and challenge you so establishing our run game, but being able to throw when we need to will be important.

Keys to winning the game on defense:

SCA has a great power run game but they can throw it all over the field. They have a tall receiver in Fleming that can go up and get the ball. We have to stop the big play.

Here’s a breakdown of Wilmington’s projected starters in the Class 2A PIAA State Championship game with coaches quotes:

OFFENSE

QB 18 **ROBERT PONTIUS JR 6’4″ 175

Robert has done a great job for us. He runs a multi-back offense and knows it well.

TE 8 **NOAH HUNT JR 5’10” 180

SE 4 ***COLTON MARETT SR 5’10” 170

We run a basic set at times, and Colton will get the ball when needed. Noah plays very well not only catching the ball but blocking also.

Offensive Line:

LT 52 *JORDAN GRAY JR 6’1″ 243

LG 54 **COLTON RICHARDS JR 6’2″ 250

C 56 **MATTY JAMISON SR 5’9″ 172

RG 50 *ALEX RAMIREZ JR 5’11” 195

RT 68 *JIMMY REED JR 5’11” 204

Our offense starts there. You have to have good blocking up front and our guys do the job we need.

Running Backs

FB 3 ***JACK PATTON SR 5’10” 185

HB 24 **CAMERON MARETT JR 5’6″ 155

HB 1 ***BRYSON VERRELLI SR 5’10” 173

Bryson was a wide receiver last year and he wanted the ball more so we moved him here. Jack is just performing well and doing what we need of him.

DEFENSE

DEFENSIVE LINE

DE 84 *JACOB YOHMAN JR 6’6″ 210

DT 68 *JIMMY REED JR 5’11” 204

DT 52 *JORDAN GRAY JR 6’1″ 243

DE 50 *ALEX RAMIREZ JR 5’11” 195

As with the offense, defense starts on the line. They’re not huge but they’re fast and get to the ball

Linebackers

OLB 3 ***JACK PATTON SR 5’10” 185

ILB 54 **COLTON RICHARDS JR 6’2″ 250

OLB 8 **NOAH HUNT JR 5’10” 180

These guys are also not big but they are fast and move to the ball.

Defensive Backs

C 1 ***BRYSON VERRELLI SR 5’10” 173

C 4 ***COLTON MARETT SR 5’10” 170

S 24 **CAMERON MARETT JR 5’6″ 155

S 18 **ROBERT PONTIUS JR 6’4″ 175

Pontius and Cam do a great job filling the holes. They aren’t tall so that will be a challenge but they have to do what’s needed

KICKERS

Kicker: #15 JACOB WINTERS

Jacob has been solid for us all year

Punter: #54 COLTON RICHARDS
