2017 Team Previews: Welcome the Erie Royals (10)

Written by: on Friday, August 25th, 2017

Well, we’ve previewed nearly 175 teams¬†(link to them all HERE) and we like to use the same format for every team, but we can’t do that for the Erie Royals because they don’t have a record for last year. Nor do that have returning starters on offense, defense or special teams. Early in 2017 a distressed Erie school district decided to consolidate their schools bringing Erie High, Central Tech and Strong Vincent together. In May, they moved forward with the plan and on June 2nd the announcement was made that the new team would be named the Erie Royals. Thirteen days later former Central Tech Head Coach Rob Matz would be named the head coach of the Royals. Below is an interview with coach Matz, followed by an introduction to the new Royals. WELCOME to WesternPAFootball.net!

What are the challenges you’ve faced so far?

” It’s been a whirlwind for sure in all aspects. From putting a new team together, to building a new locker room, to ordering new uniforms, hiring a staff, new weight room, installing our offensive and defensive game plans. But at the same time it’s been very enjoyable.”

How are the players from each former team handling the transition?

“It’s been exceptional! The players have really bought into this and the team leadership is starting to show up. We have some kids stepping up. We don’t hear about Erie High, Strong Vincent or Tech. It’s been all about the Royals from day 1. They’ve already started to take on that “family” mentality.

Quotes from Matz during their first scrimmage, versus State College:

“This is crazy. We’ve got like 90 something kids here, we just got our practice jerseys this week. No numbers on them yet, I have no idea who I’m looking at right behind those helmets right now!”

“I’m very happy with our performance today. It’s good for us to start off with such a quality opponent like State College, we’ll learn a lot from this.”

“We’ve got several guys who stepped up out there, I really liked what I saw out there.”

On the upcoming season:

“We don’t get any breaks! We come right out of the gate with a very strong Meadville team, then right back into the frying pan with defending State Champion Cathedral Prep. We’ll know a lot about our team after our first two games.”

On the Royals offensive philosphy:

We want to be a physical team, be able to run the ball but at the same time we want to be balanced. We are looking for explosive plays, but at the same time be a controlling offense”

On the Royals defensive philosophy:

“We want our offense to be a swarming defense. I want to see multiple players around the ball. We’ve definitely got some play makers. We have to continue getting improvement when it comes to defending the pass”

Special Teams:

“Tyler Viera will handle our kicking duties. He’s got a great leg and we should ok there”

WesternPAFootball.net will provide full coverage of the first Royals game at Veterans Stadium on Saturday Night.
