2017 Class 3A Preseason Rankings

Our 3A preseason rankings start off with the Sharon Tigers. With nine players on offense and eight on defense the Tigers lead the pack. Zion Strickland and  Jayquan Odem return along with incoming senior prospect Tristan Ballard give the Tigers a solid receiving corp and along with all five returning linemen to protect new QB Lane Voytik, there should be little if any drop off from last year. Strickland will also lead a very strong defense.

At #2 it’s the Quips of Aliquippa.  A perennial playoff contender, they will look to return to Hershey. Avante McKenzie, Tariq Jones and Kwantel Raines return to give them a solid backfield. Solvauhn Moreland and Dajour Fisher anchor the line joined by three newcomers. Defensively Raines, MJ Devonshire Jr. and Jones will terrorize receivers and quarterbacks alike. Devonshire had 6 interceptions last year.

At #3 it’s the Hornets of Hickory. All eyes will be tuned in to Sharon Tiger Stadium on Sept 16 when the Hornets arrive. This post season preview should be a good one. The Hornets lost rb Chuck Carr and his 6,000 yards and 101 TDs are gone, but they return NINE offense starters that can fill that void. QB Luke Brennan has thrown for 3,400 yards in his career and he’ll have Colgate commit Will Gruber to throw to along with 3 other returning receivers. The offensive line might be a weak spot with only two returning. Defensively LB Nate Marchand and Gruber will lead a fierce attack.

Coming in at #4 is a newcomer to our rankings. The Bearcats of Huntingdon only lost 2 players from a team that was a strong 6-6 after getting off to a slow start. QB Andrew Hudy, FB Ian Border and TE Ben Briggs are among 8 returning offensive players that started showing their potential in the 2016 season final stretch. Border leads the defense at LB while CB Jairus Werner , S Drew Weglarz and Jr. S Andrew Finkle lead an experienced defensive backfield.

At number five it’s another newcomer, the Mercyhurst Prep Lakers. There’s no question where this team starts and that is with Penn State Commit Jesse Luketa. The Sr. slotback leads an offense that returns all five linemen along with running back Zack Helsley. Defensively Luketa will lead the charge from his linebacker spot along with returning Dezmar Polk and Tyrese Tate. Schley leads the Dline along with Jake Woodring and John Reddinger.

2017 Class 4A Preseason Rankings

The Ramblers of Cathedral Prep are locked, loaded and ready for a repeat. After their stunning win over Imhotep in the 4A title game the Rambler go right back to work. ND commit Matthew Bauer returns, as does PSU commit Juice Scruggs and Iowa commit Terry Roberts. The Ramblers have Eight players with D1 offers and WR Stan Malewiewski holds a DII offer to Edinboro. Joe Mischler returns at QB to lead the offense along with receivers Tyler Oedekoven, Henry Fessler and Anthony Bolden. Matt Lupo and Billy Lucas are the running backs. Defensively, Bauer, Scruggs, Roberts and Fessler lead nine returning starters.

Coming in at #2 it’s the Jaguars. TJ lost a host of players that lost to CP in the semifinal round, but Bill Cherpak has some real talent returning. Devin Danielson and Dom Serapiglia will anchor a strong line. Justin Vigna takes of the RB duties and Shane Stump will lead the offense under center. Noah Palmer, Danielson and Logan Burnsworth will make a formidable Dline.

At #3, the Trojans return from a strong campaign. They return 3 on offense and 3 defensively, but when those returning are DL Shamar Jones (who holds a host of offers), QB Austin Barber, OL Eddie Simms, K Mike Marino and WR/LB Darrian Berkins those are 6 very good core players. Elijah Fields is a promising WR.

At #4 we find University Prep. It’s been a while since we’ve had a city league team in our rankings, but Head Coach Lou Berry has some horses in his stable. Sy Alli and Dorian Jackson are a running back duo that could be hard to stop. Berry is high on new QB William Kenneth-Pipkins. Jackson, Rahmir Moore and Damon Macklin lead a defense with 5 returning starters. Coming in at

#5 is the Hurricanes of New Castle. Ohio State commit Marcus Hooker returns to carry the ball behind a veteran line led by Nick Papa and K-Ci Booker. They’ll have to protect incoming So. QB Daniel Minenok. Defensively the Hurricanes are stout. Hooker will lock down the safety spot while Gino Cioppa and Booker will provide the heat up front and at linebacker respectively.
