Four years ago, Rochester went through a very un-Rochester-like 7-4 season, and, despite reaching the quarterfinals of the WPIAL A playoffs, the Rams’ faithful weren’t quite used to a season of fewer than 10 wins. The 7-4 season came after a nine-year stretch in which the Rams posted an overall record of 106-18, won five WPIAL A championships and three PIAA A titles. The winning seasons have returned – since 2008, Rochester is now 34-4 overall and has posted consecutive 12-win seasons, but the blue and white haven’t won a WPIAL A championship since 2004, though they’ve reached the WPIAL finals four times since.
The Rams do return signifcant contributors in the form of offensive linemen Sayvon Newman, Todd Weischedel and Tyler Beatrice, defensive lineman LeJay Buckenheimer, linebackers Quentin Goettman and Weischedel, defensive backs Alente Johnson and Keion Lambert and running back/defensive back D’andre Moon (931 rush yards, 17 TD). Moon is the only returning skill player with any significant 2010 season stats – Rochester’s other two leading rushers, Nick Tapia and Devon Glass, both graduated, as did quarterback Jasson Adamson, who threw for more than 2,000 yards over the last two seasons.
Rochester averaged 34.4 points per game last season, and the defense allowed only 96 points in 13 games, including holding explosive Clairton to just 12 points (a season low for the Bears). Is a fourth straight 10+ win season in store for head coach Gene Matsook (124-24 since 1999) and his Rams?
