A Sneak Peek At Penns Valley Ram Football

Written by: on Thursday, August 30th, 2012

The Rams are a young squad, but that doesn’t mean they lack experience.

Returning only five starters on each side of the football, Tobias and his staff are hoping to fill some holes with the experienced, young players in hopes of getting off to a good start Friday night.

Skipping The Sidelines With Coach Tobias

Tobias on Pre-Season camp

“We are making gradual improvement,” said Tobias about pre-season camp.” We are pleased with the work ethic, the kids learning their assignments and how to work together. We aren’t there yet so we still have a lot of work to do.“

Scrimmage Notes

“We had a tri-scrimmage with Richland and Bishop Carroll and the results of that was a mixed bag,” Tobias said. “There were some things we felt good about. We felt the kids knew what they were doing as far as their assignments were concerned. From the linemen standpoint, the kids were getting in the right places. We just didn’t make the plays as consistently as we need to and we didn’t block and tackle as well as we need to. Overall, we felt the mental part was good, but the physical part is still coming. With some extra effort, all things we saw that need work are fixable.”

Numbers and experience

“We have had to make some adjustments from the first week to the second week,” said Tobias. “We moved some kids around based on need as well as the potential they showed in those positions. We feel that we have the kids where they need to be. We have seventeen returning lettermen with five starters on each side of the ball so there is something to work with. We have some other kids who did get some experience at the varsity level and we are still young. Of the forty-two kids on the roster, only nine are seniors.”

Returning from the off-season

“The kids came back rather upbeat and pretty strong,” said Tobias. “They seem to be really focused on what we are doing as well as the directions we want to go. I think they feel good about the direction we are going and the teammates they have around them and we have seen a lot of good vibes and positive energy from them.”

“We have a nice group of seniors to look to for leadership,” said Tobias. “Kids like Zach Harter took a big step up to lead and Dom Hook has also teamed with Harter to vocally lead the younger kids as well as lead by example. They take the time to talk with the younger kids as well as show them how it is to be done to help bring them along. We can’t rely on two or three kids to carry this team because we don’t have any of those marquis players, so to be successful, we are going to have to play as a team.”
