There’s a magical number when it comes to coaches of D1 schools and linebackers that I hear all the time: “Is he 6 foot?” I’ve heard it many times. For Lehigh Defensive Coordinator Craig Sutyak and his staff, they we willing to overlook that number. And with good reason. Five foot eleven, 195 pound Altoona linebacker/DB Mitchell Lawhead plays like he’s 6-2. Quick to the ball and often able to out leap receivers, the Hawks got a prize today as Lawhead committed to play for them next year.
Lawhead announced his decision on twitter:
We caught up with him and asked him about his decision:
WPA: why did you choose Lehigh?
Mitch: I chose Lehigh because every time I went there it felt like home and the players and coaches were great people
WPA: who was your biggest influence at Lehigh, who recruited you?
Mitch: Coach Sutyak recruited me and made me feel at home every time I visited
WPA: what do your parents think of your decision?
Mitch: My parents are happy for me especially since they went there and are excited for my next chapter.
WPA: what are they getting in player like you?
Mitch: Lehigh is getting a player who will work hard and be relentless on the field
WPA: what position will you play?
Mitch: I will be playing strong safety line backer hybrid
WPA: why commit early?
Mitch: I did not want to wait till the spring for other schools that were interested I really liked Lehigh and felt now was the right time
WPA: what was the recruiting process like for you?
Mitch: The Recruiting process was a fun but stressful time it definitely feels good to commit but I hated telling other coaches no.
WPA: Do you know what you’d like to study?
Mitch: I am going to study pre law and hopefully become a lawyer
WPA: What do you think is the most exciting thing about Lehigh?
Mitch: I think the amount of talent they bring in each year I know I’m going to a successful football team who wins and runs a great program
WPA: How will this affect your play for your senior season?
Mitch: It changes nothing I’m still gonna play every snap as hard as possible and enjoy every moment of my senior year
