Altoona Mirror PreSeason Blitz 2013

Written by: on Monday, July 29th, 2013

Blitz2013Later this summer, the Altoona Mirror will unveil the region’s first glossy magazine dedicated solely to high school football.

Blitz 2013 will be produced by the Mirror’s award-winning sports department and features preview sections on 26 area high school teams, primarily in Blair, Bedford, Huntingdon, southern Clearfield and northern Cambria counties. The 116-page magazine will be available on newsstands on Monday, July 29, at a $4.95 cover price. It can also be ordered online by visiting

“The Mirror has long been known as the authority on high school sports in west central Pennsylvania and we envision Blitz as the ‘Sports Illustrated’ of high school football,” said Ray Eckenrode, the Mirror’s general manager for advertising. “When fans pick up their college and NFL preview magazines in late August, we now have something just as complete and just as slick for high school football.”

Blitz will feature player profiles and feature stories, photos, schedules, historical statistics and a scouting report on each team from Phil Cmor, the Mirror’s well-versed high school sports guru.

“Local sports is our franchise and we’ve been nationally recognized for our coverage for the past 10 years,” said Neil Rudel, the Mirror’s managing editor, “and we see this glossy magazine as a natural extension for serious fans of what we already do in print and online covering high school football in the region.”

Rudel noted the Mirror still will produce its usual newsprint preseason football section, which will be included in the Tuesday, Aug. 27, edition of the paper.

The magazine will be available at Giant Eagle locations in Altoona, Bedford and Ebensburg; at Martin’s food markets in the Altoona area; at Street Corner News in the Logan Valley Mall; and at Martin’s General  Store locations throughout the region; as well as at the Mirror offices in Altoona. The magazine can be purchased online and mailed to the buyer by visiting and clicking on the “order” button.  A complete and updated list of sales locations can be found on the web site, as well.

Schools previewed in Blitz include Altoona, Bishop Guilfoyle, Hollidaysburg, Bellwood-Antis, Tyrone, Williamsburg, Central, Claysburg-Kimmel, Northern Bedford, Chestnut Ridge, Bedford, Tussey Mountain, Everett, Huntingdon, Juniata Valley, State College, Philipsburg-Osceola, Moshannon Valley, Glendale, Cambria Heights, Northern Cambria, Central Cambria, Penn Cambria, Bishop Carroll, Forest Hills and Portage.
