Bellwood-Antis sacks Northern Bedford for ICC gold

With the score tied at 14 just before the half, Northern Bedford quarterback Blake Over launched a hail mary pass to the end zone. Bellwood-Antis LB Tanner Snyder picked the ball off and made one heck of an effort to return it for a score but came up 50 yards short. That alone doesn’t sound spectacular or game changing, but it was what happened after the play that changed the game. The Northern Bedford player that tackled him started punching Snyder. That resulted in the player being ejected and a 15 yard penalty enforced on the kick to start the second half. Blue Devil rb Casey Gray fielded the kick and returned it 37 yards to the 33 of Northern Bedford. Seven plays later Tanner Snyder broke the tie on a 5 yard run but it was the Blue Devil defense that took the punch out of the Black Panthers, sacking the shifty Over 4 times in the second half en-route to a 42-14 win to claim the ICC Gold Title.
“That’s always one of our goals, to win the conference title. Now we get ready for the playoffs” said Bellwood coach John Hayes. “The penalty to end that first half, that was a shame. I don’t know, maybe we just played rope-a-dope with them and that one fired us up.”
The Blue Devils didn’t get off to a great start, turning the ball over on their first two possessions. The Panthers struck first blood driving 67 yards, capped by a 3 yard td run from Austin Heck.
Bellwood would answer with an impressive drive of its own, going 60 yards and capping it with a 5 yard Jake Stapleton td run to make it 7-6 after a failed kick after. Blake Over needed just three plays to retaliate. The signal caller took the snap and ran right, then turned straight up field and 70 yards later the score was 14-6. “He’s a great athlete, a one man team if you will. Got speed, changes direction. We had our hands full” said Hayes of the opposing qb.
Casey Gray has some speed of his own and on the next drive he showcased it. First a run of 33 yards, then a 20 burst up the middle for a score. Gray then took a pitch from QB Jake Burch, ran right and stopped. He then launched a rainbow back across the field and a leaping Burch brought down the 2 point conversion to tie the game.
With the score 21-14 Northern Bedord drove to the Bellwood 33. That’s when the wheels fell off the cart. Three penalties and 3 sacks put the ball back at the 50 and the Panthers were forced to punt away on a drive that ate up nearly 9 minutes. “We just came out angry but focused on what we thought they were going to run” said Bellwood DE Trenton Creppage.
Kyler Larden took center stage on the next drive bursting down the sidelines for 57 yards to the 15 before Kyler Deihl tripped him up from behind. Snyder took it in from 9 yards out to make it 28-14.
Ryan Bouslough dropped Over for a 6 yard loss to register his second sack of the night, forcing another Panther punt. Casey Gray would add two 1 yard scoring runs to cap the scoring.
