There has never been a Super Bowl without a player who has played in the Big 33 all-star classic. That streak will continue next Sunday as five players will represent the Big 33 when the Steelers take on the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl 43.
For the Steelers you don’t have to look to hard to find a Big 33 Alum, Ben Roethlisberger the youngest QB to win a Super Bowl is back in the big game. “My first love was basketball, but I enjoyed playing in the game and doing it with friends out there.” Ben said, looking back at his final game before going to Miami, OH for college.
The Steelers have two other former Big 33 players in Super Bowl XLIII, in Sean McHugh and Scott Paxson. Both Roethlisberger and McHugh played for Ohio and Scott Paxson played for Pennsylvania.
The Arizona Cardinals are making their first trip to the Super Bowl in team history, however still have two players that have roots in the Keystone State. Former Woody High stand out Steve Breston, and Victor Hobson who played for St. Joseph’s Prep.
Super bowl 43 is yet another NFL Championship that will have a player that played in the Big 33 game. However this year, not only will their be five players but their will also be a coach. Former Steelers coach, and current Cardinals offensive coordinator Russ Grimm is an alum of Big 33 game also. Will this years class of Big 33 players, be able to keep the streak alive? That question is sure to be answered in a matter of years.
