Prior to the start of the 2011 season, head coach Jim Render noted in conversation that “it was time” for Upper St. Clair to reassert itself as the kings of the then-Great Southern Conference, as the Panthers hadn’t won a conference title since 2006, when it claimed WPIAL and PIAA gold. USC not only won its conference, but went all the way to Heinz Field before being felled by North Allegheny, 28-21, in overtime.
USC lost several quality offensive pieces from its 2011 team, including three Division-1 FBS recruits in Ian Park, Dakota Conwell and Jack Schwaba, as well as home-run weapon Mike Wilcox at wideout. The Panthers also will be without returning defensive presence Rori Blair, who was not cleared to play from a stroke suffered in the offseason. But dual-threat quarterback Pete Coughlin, who amassed 500 yards of total offense in two games and engineered a dramatic 28-14 victory over highly regarded and nationally-ranked Pittsburgh Central Catholic, as well as offensive lineman Austin Park, return, providing some veteran leadership and playoff experience.
