McDowell switched to a flexbone/triple-option offensive philosophy in 2008 with head coach Mark Soboleski, and has posted an impressive 31-13 overall record in that span while mostly competing against WPIAL programs.
Not many programs employ a flexbone offense these days, and it could help the Trojans in a brutal schedule which includes four Ohio programs and defending PIAA AA champion Lancaster Catholic. Jarrett Koper, a dual-threat athlete who was poised to run the McDowell flexbone, sustained an injury and will miss significant time – Koper amassed more than 800 yards of total offense in his junior season. Though losing Koper stings, McDowell still has the returning backfield presences of Khyre Drayer and James Conner. Conner, who also doubles as a defensive lineman, is garnering Division-1 attention. Come November,
McDowell’s overall record may not look overwhelming on the surface, but playing the schedule it is will allow the Trojans to put forth a battle-tested group that nobody in the District 8/10 subregional or 6/9 AAAA subregional winner will have an easy time facing.
