Burgettstown used a solid defense, excellent special teams and did just enough on offense to upend Serra Catholic 34-14 Saturday afternoon.
“I’m pretty happy, but we made plenty of mistakes,” said Burgettstown head coach Mark Druga. “We have to iron out many things. There are some passing routes and penalties we need to fix.”
The Blue Devils again rode the excellent play of senior Seth Phillis who caught a touchdown, returned an interception for another, and added two first-half field goals.
Offensively the Blue Devils struck quickly with quarterback Jake Lounder’s 25-yard run not even two minutes in to open the scoring.

Both defenses stepped up the remainder of the half.
“We played good defense, to be down only a couple scores at halftime given all the mistakes we made on offense and with penalties was a blessing,” said Serra Catholic head coach Jose Regus.”We felt we still had a chance at halftime.”
Burgettstown would take 13-0 lead into the locker room as Phillis booted field goals of 27 and 20 yards.
“This week we’re going to fix a bunch of things on offense,” said Druga.
The Blue Devils then extended their lead in the third quarter as Lounder threw a deep pass to Phillis who made a leaping catching and took it 67 yards to give Burgettstown some breathing room at 20-0.
Serra Catholic would get on board on Paul Pearson’s 25-yard reception from Max Rocco following great field position off a short punt.
“It was tough early on, we had some personal issues,” said Regus. “Not to make excuses, but some guys didn’t start the game because they were late for practice. We couldn’t find ourselves today. We tried some new things, but it didn’t work out for us.”
Lounder would score on a 3-yard run to close the third quarter. He led the Blue Devils with 157 yards of total offense. He threw for 111 yards on 7-of-18 passing while adding 46 yards on the ground on 16 carries.
Phillis added three catches for 84 yards, three interceptions, and also ran three times for 16 yards.
“I’ve been saying it to all the media outlets that he is the conference MVP,” said Druga. “There’s nobody like him. He’s special. He’ll kick off, punt, receive, and play defense.”
Phills hauls in a 67-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Speaking of Phillis, he would all but seal the game by intercepting a tipped ball and returning it 85 yards for a touchdown.
It was one of three interceptions by Phillis. Burgettstown had four in the game with the other being by Shane Kemper.
As a team Serra Catholic was limited to 194 yards of total offense.
“I was very pleased with our defense, “said Druga. “They have some great skill at Serra Catholic. We were able to shut their running game down for the most part. In the passing game, our secondary was great, just attacking the ball all game and making plays.”
Taking over a quarterback for the Eagles, Zion LaTouche scored on a 10-yard run late in the game after completing a 40-yard pass to Jayden Bristol.

“From now on out each week becomes even more important if we want to make the playoffs,” said Regus. “For us to get in, we have to win out. It’s going to be a challenge, but we’ll be up for it.”
Burgettstown improves to 5-0 on the season while Serra Catholic falls to 3-3.
“We’re at the midway point right now, and I couldn’t be happier,” said Druga. “Our biggest concern this year was replacing the three linemen we lost. We’ve done a great job of replacing them. We have soe things iron out, but I’m happy with where we’re headed.”
