“We were still standing,” said Central Valley coach Mark Lyons after the Warriors and Aliquippa Quips needed overtime to decide the 3A WPIAL champion as the Warriors won 13-12 over the Quips. In the second quarter, the Quips opened up the scoring with a pass from senior Isaiah Towler to senior Chinua Soloman in the back of the endzone to make the score 6-0 after the failed point after attempt. That score would carry into halftime.

The first points for the Central Valley Warriors would have to wait till the fourth quarter. Central Valley would find the endzone on a fourth and six following a false start penalty. Junior quarterback Ameer Dudley would roll out to his right and find junior running back Jaylen Guy wide open in the endzone. After the missed point after attempt, the score would remain tied at 6. The final minutes of regulation would include two interceptions by junior defensive back Stephon Hall which prevented Aliquippa from scoring and pushed the game into overtime.

In overtime, Central Valley opened up with the ball and they used one play to score when senior receiver Michael Barbuto took the ball on a jet sweep and got stopped on the three yard line. But with help of his team, the Warriors pushed the final three yards into the endzone. Despite using a backup snapper and holder, senior kicker Ethan Ott kicked the ball through to put Central Valley up 13-6. Aliquippa had four plays to respond and after losing one yard on first down, Towler raced 11 yards into the endzone to make the score 13-12. The Quips opted to go for two on the point after attempt. Towlers took the snap rolled out to the left and got stopped by the Central Valley defense at the two yard line clinching the 3A WPIAL title for the Warriors. This is the third WPIAL title in Central Valley’s 9 year history. They advance to the 3A PIAA semifinals two weeks from now. The Aliquippa Quips finish 11-2 and second in the Tri-County West conference.
