Bellefonte’s CJ Funk will remember his 18th birthday for quite a while. The Raiders’ senior running back ran for 113 yards and scored three times as Bellefonte rolled over BEA,38-0, in their annual Curtin Bowl battle.
After scoring twice in the first half Funk ran the ball on Bellefonte’s first two plays in the second half, going 16 yards on his first carry and 20 yards for a TD on his second, which turned out to be his final carry of the night.
BEA, which has been battling injuries, chose to sit all of its starters in preparation for next week’s District 6 3A playoff game.“We gave the kids three options,’’ said Eagles coach Jesse Nagle. “We could sit the kids who were banged up, we could play the kids who were banged up or we could sit all of the starters. The kids went in a room and made the decision. It was a tough decision but it was a wise one.’’
Bellefonte coach Shannon Manning said he had heard the Eagles might choose to rest their starters but wasn’t total convinced.“We did what we needed to do to win the game,’’ he said. “It was a very fluid situation; they could have decided to use their starters. So we prepared for the kids we saw on film. I thought our kids played well, especially on defense. We had to knock a little rust off in the first half but in the second half we got rolling. We got a chance to get some young kids playing time. We didn’t have any reason to score any more.’’
In a touch of class BEA chose to honor the Raider senior players and band members at halftime since Bellefonte lost its senior night game against Bishop Carroll last week when it received a forfeit.
