Clearfield’s Caleb Freeman scores 5 times, leads Bison to win over Penns Valley

Written by: on Saturday, September 1st, 2018

It started out harmless enough, Clearfield held Penns Valley to three plays and forced a Ram punt, then took their opening drive to the endzone. A 68 yard drive that saw Isaac Rumery, one of the better QBs in the state, throw the ball around completing 4 passes for 53 of those yards. He then carried the ball over the goal line from 8 yards out putting Clearfield on top 7-0 with 7:39 to go in the first. Going to be a quick game I thought. 2A Penns Valley is young, they’ll fight. But come on, no way. Three hours and 7 minutes later Clearfield left Gregg Township with a 14 point win. Pretty good margin right? Especially considering at halftime it was tied at 21 all. The Rams and Bison went on an offensive rampage that put a total of 14 touchdowns on the board and over 900 yards of offense.  It was the third quarter, however, that Clearfield gained the advantage. The Rams were eventually outscored by Clearfield 28-7 in the quarter and the Bison escaped with a 56-42 win, but had one play gone differently who knows what would have happened. But it was game MVP Caleb Freeman who led the show with 5 tds  on 16 carries, gaining 125 yards.

Following that opening drive, Penns Valley quarterback Aaron Tobias found Cole Breon streaking up the middle for a 31 yard td to tie the game at 7. After forcing a rare punt, the Ram duo again hooked up to put Penns Valley up 14-7 on a 30 yard td pass at the end of the first quarter. The teams battled back and forth like this the entire second quarter also. Freeman got his first score at the 10:35 mark in the second quarter from 13 yards out after Rumery found Taye Lynch on a 47 yard pick up making it 14 all.

The Bison took the lead on Freelands second td, a 4 yard run. But the Rams fought right back and Tobias, who had a pretty good night himself going for 24 of 36 for 439 yards with 4 tds and 1 interception, found Logan Snyder for 34 yards, Breon for 36 then Austin Fisher from 5 yards out to tie the game at 21 just before the half.

As other teams just west of the PV area were dealing with lightening strikes from the air, we had lightening on the ground to start the third quarter. Jake Lezzer took the opening kick 83 yards to put the bison up 28-21. Ripka then returned the favor returning the ensuing kick 79 yards to tie it up, but it was here the Bison made a stand. “The atmosphere in the locker room at half time was crazy” said Rumery. “We knew we had to come out and get going, and when Lezzer ran that ball back it gave us the spark we needed”.

The Penns Valley booster club raised money to help Jersey Shore player Caleb Leone, who was injured during the preseason

Rumery again went long and found Lezzer for a 49 yard td on a two play drive to put the Bison up for good, 35-28. Oliver Billotte intercepted a Tobias pass at the 34. Three plays later Freeland scampered 32 yards for his third to make it 42-28.

The Rams fought back and had a chance to get within 7 points, driving to the Bison 12, but Justin Hand sacked Tobias and the Rams never capitalized with their drive stalling at the three yard line. Tim Janockos team then drove 97 yards, using a faked punt and another td run from Freeland, a 34 yard run, to go up 49-28 putting the game out of reach. “I couldn’t have done this tonight without my line” said Freeland. “They made the holes so big it was easy to get through the line. Once I seen them I just took off, I didn’t want to get caught.”

Ripka would score  for the Rams one more time, and Freeland scored his fifth on a 5 yard run and Tobias to Snyder would close out the scoring.

Clearfield moves to 2-0 and will face Central while Penns Valley (1-1) travels to Bald Eagle
