Christian Cole continued his dominance as Oil City pulled away for a 28-10 victory Friday night over Slippery Rock.
“Running the ball and taking time off the clock is what we do,” said Oil City head coach Dan York. “Christian is a special back, and he did a great job along with our offensive line.”
Cole rushed for an unofficial 218 yards and scored three touchdowns on 35 carries. He had 128 yards and two touchdowns at halftime as the Oilers led 16-3.
Oil City chewed up nearly eight minutes on their opening drive, but Rockets defense held steady as they shut down three consecutive rushing plays and forced Oilers quarterback Holden Stahl to throw incomplete on 4th down.
Cole would punch in a 1-yard touchdown on Oil City’s next possession to give them an 8-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Slippery Rock would respond with a 25-yard field goal by Nathan Willison to cut the deficit to 8-3. The Rockets were looking at a 2nd-and-goal from the 3-yard line before a false start penalty moved them back – that would allow the Oil City defense to come up with two big stops as Rockets quarterback Vito Pilosi throw incomplete twice.
Oil City stuck in the end zone again before halftime as Cole broke free for a 21-yard touchdown with 51 seconds to play in the first half.

The Oilers threw just three passes in the game and none by quarterback Stahl in the second-half.
“We saw some openings to the throw the ball, but we choose not to – that’s not in our chemistry,” said York.
Cam Russell put the icing on the cake for the Oilers late in the third quarter as he ran an end-around 56 yards for a touchdown on his only carry of the game. Cole would go on and break loose for a 59-yard score early in the fourth quarter.
But it was the Oilers defense that showed up and shut down a Slippery Rock offense that was averaging nearly 42 points a game during their 3-game winning streak. The Rockets were limited to just 220 yards of offense.
“Defensively we played a great game because I knew Pilosi and Kaleb Kamerer are great athletes. They’re very well-coach, and play great defense,” said York.
“That’s a great football team, and we knew that coming in,” said Slippery Rock head coach Larry Wendereusz. “At times we did what we needed to do, and at times we didn’t. Good football teams will take advantage of that. With that a great running back and offensive line and if you make those mistakes, they’re going to make you pay for it.”
Slippery Rock closed the scoring with a 10-yard run from Pilosi with 1:40 remaining. He led the Rockets with 78 yards on 14 carries while also completing 7-of-12 passes for 70 yards. Slippery Rock will have a bye next week before heading into the playoffs.

“Tonight was more of the case of us not getting stops to get out offense moving,” said Wendereusz. “We have to be prepared for the physicality and nature of the playoffs. But for right now, we need to look and learn from tonight’s game.”
Oil City will travel to Bradford next week and then get ready to play General McLane in the District 10 title game the weekend of November 3rd. The Lancers beat the Oilers 17-12 on September 14th and won Region 7.
“We know we’re going to have another shot at General McLane,” said York. “We’re in the District 10 Championship, and that’s what everybody plays for.”
Christian Cole now has an unofficial 2667 yards on the season with 37 touchdowns on the ground.
“Christian is a great back, and he’s been good all year,” said York.
