Southmoreland started the game with the ball and they had good field position to start the game. They were at the 50 yard line. This drive took up a lot of time and it paid off when Colt Harper scored on a 5 yard run to make it 7-0 with 8:45 in the first quarter.
Later in the first quarter Southmoreland would extend their lead to 14-0. It was a second run by Colt Harper this one for 18 yards.
McGuffey needed an answer and they got just that. They started the drive at their own 38. After a 10 yard penalty Nathan Yagle busted a big 66 yard touchdown run making it 14-7 with 1:56 in the first quarter.
Southmoreland got the ball back and couldn’t do anything with the ball. They went to punt and it was blocked by Nathan Yagle. That gave the ball to McGuffey at Southmoreland’s 15. On the very first play Marshall Whipkey scored on a 15 yard run as time expired in the first quarter and that tied it at 14 at the end of 1.
McGuffey would take the lead in the second quarter when Marshall Whipkey connected with Tyler Smith for a 20 yard touchdown.
McGuffey had all the momentum at this point of the game scoring 21 unanswered points to take a 7 point lead. Toward the end of the quarter Southmoreland put together a nice long drive. The drive took 12+ plays and with 1:09 left before the half Zach Cernuto connected with Brandon Peterson for a 10 yard touchdown. That made the score 21 all at the half.
McGuffey got the ball to start the second half. This drive also took more than 10 plays. It took up a little over 5 minutes of the third quarter and it was ended on a 15 yard pass from Marshall Whipkey to Jared Johnson.
McGuffey had their chances to extend their lead in the quarter but they didn’t. Southmoreland would take advantage of that when they tied it up once again when Zach Cernuto connected with Brandon Peterson for a 68 yard touchdown strike which tied it at 28 with 43 seconds in the third.
After that McGuffey took control of the game. They regained the lead on a 24 yard touchdown run by Jared Johnson. Johnson had a big game scoring 4 touchdowns and nearly had 100 yards rushing. “He started to rip runs at the end and got good blocking” said Coach Dalton.
Mistakes plagued Southmoreland in the quarter. Several penalties and the big one in particular was a fumbled kick return, which gave McGuffey the ball. Jared Johnson scored his third touchdown of the game from 9 yards out which made it 41-28. “It was probably the nail in the coffin, because we were able to go down and score there” said Coach Dalton.
McGuffey added 2 more touchdowns before the end of the game one of which was a fourth touchdown run Jared Johnson that one was 57 yards.
The final score ended up being 55-28 with McGuffey scoring 27 unanswered points in the fourth and final quarter.
McGuffey is now 6-0 and will travel to Brownsville next week. Southmoreland falls to 5-1 and looks to bounce back in a big game at home again against Charleroi.
