Dylan Deitrich scores 4 times, leading Bellefonte to first District 6 title since 1999

Shannon Manning has experienced this feeling once before. Bellefonte won it’s first district title since 1999 with a convincing 34-12 win over the Johnstown Trojans in Hollidaysburg. “Unbelievable, cause I was there for that one too. I coached with Tommy Gravish for that one but this one is special” said Manning of the win. Bellefonte used a bend but don’t break defense, stopping the Trojans on fourth down 4 times and held the Trojans to just 6 offensive points in the game.  Dylan Deitrich scored 4 times running for over 150 yards and once again led his team to victory.

Johnstown took the lead early on a short pass from Austin Barber to Darrian Berkins. The 2 point try failed but Johnstown led 6-0 with 6:11 left in the first quarter.

On the ensuing drive, Deitrich made his only mistake of the game. After having what would have been a long td run called back on a penalty, Barber picked off his pass and returned it to the 25 but the Raider defense held tough forcing a fourth down. The Trojans the lost the ball on a failed quick kick attempt and Bellefonte was in business at the Trojan 25. CJ Funk carried the ball to the endzone on an 8 yard run but was hit at the goal line and dropped the ball. Jaymz McClelland pounced on the ball for the first Raider score. The kick after made it 7-6 and Bellefonte never looked back. Deitrich wasn’t worried about the early Trojan score. “That first td. It was early on in the first 4 minutes I think. The game is 48 minutes long and the first four minutes of the game doesn’t dictate the rest of the game. We just knew we had to come back and score.”

Johnstown took over at the 39 and drove to the Raider two yard line but on fourth and one, the Bellefonte defense made it’s first big stop of the night, holding the Trojans at the two. The Raiders then went on a 12 play,  98 yard drive that was capped with Deitrich’s first td of the night. Highlighting the drive was a 22 yard pass to Cade Fortney. “I don’t mean from a scoring perspective, but from a psychological perspective. When we stopped them there, and turned around and marched it 99-yards, I personally felt that’s when we felt we had control of the football game.”” said Manning. Fortney then intercepted a pass from back up qb Emil Britt who was called to duty when Barber went down with an injury. Bellefonte drove to the 9 near the end of the half but was unable to convert on a field goal attempt leaving the score 14-6 at the break. “When Barber went down it was really tough at first. We had to adjust and figure out what they were doing” said Manning.

Bellefonte got the ball to start the second half and wasted no time extending their lead. Starting at their own 49 after a great return by Fortney, Deitrich led his team to the endzone to go up 14-6. Fortney made a spectacular one handed leaping catch to convert a third and long. He again came through o

n another third an long, running for 17 yards to put the Raiders at the 13. Deitrich did the rest on the next play to make it 21-6 Bellefonte with 10:26 left in the fourth quarter. On those third down conversions Manning said “Cade makes a one handed catch, we convert 2 third and longs.“That’s how you win district titles. Those plays have to be made. Somebody makes those plays, somebody wins district titles and tonight it was us.”

Bellefonte’s defense again came up big. Johnstown drove 61 yards to the Raider 8, but on fourth down the Trojans failed to connect on a pass in the end zone. Misfortune then gave the Trojans their only other score of the night as the snap from shotgun went over Deitrich’s head and Johnstown tackle Tishaun Carmichael landed on the ball in the end zone. “That was a huge downer but we knew we were still up 2 possessions. We just wanted to come out and score again and we did” said Funk. Come back they did. Deitrich ran the ball four times for 37 yards, connected on 2 pass plays with running back Stephen Kutches to covert on third downs, then went in from the 3 to make it 28-12.

“Its definitely a dream come true. It feels good, we just have to go into the next week and play even harder, I just wanted to play to the best of my ability to help my team” said Deitrich who capped the scoring after another 4th down stop by the Raider defense, going in again from the 3. “What really helped us was Bald Eagle Area allowed us to practice on their turf for 2 days this week. We used our athletes to try to simulate what we’d see the best we could. I was scared not having school today to see how our kids would respond” said Manning.

Bellefonte will enter the state 4A tournament next week against Selinsgrove at a time and location to be determined.
