This game was certainly an interesting game. In the first half it was defense, the third quarter featured the exact opposite of the first half with both teams scoring, and in the fourth quarter it was a combination of both offense and defense, but the difference was a last minute touchdown to give Gateway a 17-13 victory.
Gateway got the ball to start the game but went 3 and out. Bethel Park went 3 and out as well on their first drive. Gateway started their second drive with good field position which started at their own 49 and after 1 run they were at the Bethel Park 38. Unfortunately that drive stalled and they turned it over on downs.
The next few drives both teams struggled to get anything going. But eventually their was a drive that Gateway got a great opportunity to score and it started at the Bethel Park 39. After a run by Derrick Davis they were at the 10 yard line. They got all the way down to the 2 but a bad snap made it fourth and goal at the 5 and a pass was dropped in the end zone. “We felt like we left a lot of things on the field in the first half” said Coach Holl.
The next Bethel Park drive started at their own 5. They got past midfield but the drive stalled on penalties. Gateway also had a decent drive but didn’t score and it was a scoreless game at the half.
Bethel Park got the ball to start the second half and this is where the game turned into a good one. A big play on that drive was a pass from Anthony Chiccitt to Jehvonn Lewis to the Gateway 46. Bethel Park would eventually find the end zone on a quarterback keeper by Chiccitt making it 7-0 with 9:38 in the third quarter.
A little over a minute later Gateway tied it up when Bryson Venanzio connected with Chamor Price for a 69 yard touchdown. Venanzio had a good night he was 12 of 23 for 180 yards.
The next drive was setup by a big kick return by Jehvonn Lewis and the drive started at the 15. In the end they settled for a 23 yard field goal by John Gummo. The next drive Gateway also kicked a field goal which was a 33 yard field goal by Jayson Jenkins and at the end of 3 the score was tied at 10.
The fourth quarter was similar to the first half with both defenses doing well. It was in the last few minutes where things heated up. Gateway started a drive at their own 30 and on the first play it was fumbled and Bethel Park recovered at the Gateway 27 yard line. Gateway’s defense did keep them out of the end zone but Bethel Park regained the lead on a 25 yard field goal by John Gummo.
Down 13-10, Gateway started their drive at the 38. The drive featured several plays by junior standout Derrick Davis he got Gateway to the 50 and eventually inside the 40. The knockout punch came when Venanzio completed a pass to Patrick Body for a 28 yard touchdown which gave Gateway a 17-13 lead with 38 seconds left. “The kids said we’re not gonna lose” said Coach Holl. The game ended when Anthony Chiccitt was sacked on fourth down.
Next week Gateway will play McKeesport in the WPIAL 5A Semifinals at a location to be determined.
