Penn Trafford started with the ball to start the game. They put together one heck of a drive. They started on their own 5 and marched right down the field to eventually score on a 2 yard run by Gabe Dunlap. The drive took up nearly 10 minutes of the first quarter.

I asked Coach Holl at the end of the game about that drive and about how they adjusted defensively after that and he said, “We had a couple of busts on that drive, and they had third down conversions, and when teams are converting third downs they keep the ball and when you get them off the field they don’t and I think later in the game, we stopped them on third and fourth downs, and when they convert they keep it, and if we don’t let them convert we take it away, and I think that’s what happened as the game moved on.”

After that drive Gateway went 3 and out and gave it back to Penn Trafford. On that drive a penalty stalled the drive. Penn Trafford led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Gateway finally got on the scoreboard with 8:16 in the second quarter on a 1 yard run by Derrick Davis. Gateway did botch the extra point and Penn Trafford still led 7-6.

With 43 seconds left before half Gateway took the lead when Brendan Majocha connected with Derrick Davis for a 36 yard touchdown strike. And Majocha ran it in for the 2 point conversion. Gateway led 14-7 at the half.

Gateway started with the ball to start the second half and they put a similar type of drive together that Penn Trafford had to start the game except it didn’t take up as much time.

Gateway scored when Brendan Majocha connected with Courtney Jackson for a 5 yard touchdown. Penn Trafford blocked the extra point which made 20-7 Gateway.

The ensuing possession Penn Trafford was putting together a nice drive and were in Gateway territory, unfortunately they turned the ball over on downs, and it resulted in zero points.

Gateway basically put the game away in the first minute of the final quarter on a 4 yard touchdown run by Courtney Jackson. On that drive Majocha connected with 4 different receivers, Jackson had 2 catches on that drive. I asked Coach Holl after the game what it is like to have so many weapons on offense and he said, “It is pretty neat we got a lot of kids that work hard and they’re talented, and we got a lot of playmakers and it is fun to watch them and I’m a fan sometimes when they do their thing.”

Gateway ultimately pulled away in the second half. At the end of the game Coach Holl also added this, “I said before the game Penn Trafford isn’t a team, they’re a program and they pushed us around and they were a great challenge. The take away for me tonight is our kids hung in there and found a way to win and make the plays that we had to.”

Several players had a solid night for Gateway. Brendan Majocha was 13 of 20 and threw for 176 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had 8 runs for 58 yards. Courtney Jackson and Derrick Davis both had a big nights also. Jackson had 21 rushing yards and had 3 catches for 50 yards and had 2 total touchdowns. Davis had 12 carries for 90 yards, and 3 catches for 57 yards with 2 total touchdowns. Penn Trafford was led by QB Gabe Dunlap who had 20 rushes for 112 yards (not including sack numbers). And was 9 of 18 for 102 yards passing.

Next week Gateway travels to Plum, and Penn Trafford looks to get in the win column at home against Connellsville.
