Grove City advances to the District 10 championship for the 4th-straight year.
“What a game, I’m so proud of the kids,” said Grove City head coach Sam Mowrey. “They came out here and played 48 minutes. Through the ups and downs, they kept chucking away and put together a great football game.”
After losing a heartbreaking 21-19 decision to Hickory on September 27th, Grove City dominated the playoff rematch up a 34-13 victory over the Hornets.
“I told the kids we have a phycological advantage because we beat them,” said Hickory head coach Bill Dungee. “Then, there’s the emotional advantage that goes to the team that lost prior.”
The Eagles got big games from running back Colby Nelson and quarterback Logan Breese.
Nelson rushed for a game-high 181 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries, while Breese completed 15-of-22 passes for 209 yards and four touchdowns.
“Logan is at his best when he’s throwing the ball in rhythm,” said Mowrey. “He’s developed trust with the receivers and line did a great job of protecting as well. Colby has been a blue-collar kid. He gets fired up out there for being a quiet kid. He keeps getting the ball and running hard with it.”
Grove City broke the ice as Sayyid Muhammad intercepted a Michael Henwood and returned it for six, though an illegal block penalty negated the return.

That interception would be the first of three times the Eagles would pickoff Henwood. Muhammad would have two of those, while Jake Reddick also added one.
“Sayyid earned our hard hat award this week for the best teammate,” said Mowrey. “He’s a kid that started the year as a young sophomore and now he’s a veteran out there. He did a great job of stepping up today.”
Defensively Grove City held Hickory to just 206 yards of total offense, including only 76 yards rushing.
“Our defensive staff got them ready all week long,” said Mowrey. “The bottom line is the kids went out there and made plays. We preach to them to do your job, and they did that today.”
“Our offense let us down today, we turned it over early,” said Dungee. “We had guys open, and either had our players run into each other or underthrew the ball. My hats off to Grove City, they beat us in man-to-man coverage.”
Daiveon Say hauled in a 54-yard pass from Breese midway through the second quarter that gave the Eagles a 14-0 by halftime.
Following Reddick’s interception of Henwood, Breese connected with Zack Martin for an 18-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.
Reddick would then find the endzone from Breese on a 9-yard score extending the lead 27-0 in the fourth quarter. Say would also see the endzone in the final stanza scoring on a 32-yard touchdown reception.
Say led all receivers with 126 yards on six catches.
Hickory got a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns as Henwood found Hunter Stoots for seven yards and Nate Richards on a 14-yard pass.

Henwood led Hickory going 12-for-27 passing for 130 yards with a pair of touchdowns and three interceptions. He also rushed for 35 yards on 17 attempts and intercepted a pass on defense.
“My hats off to coach Mowrey and everything they did,” said Dungee. “They had a great gameplan. I told our guys we can’t hang our heads, we got beat today. My senior class gave me everything from week one. We did have a successful season, and we’ll be ready for next year.”
Grove City will now meet Sharon for the District 10 3A title for a second straight year. Sharon beat the Eagles 30-23 this season on October 4th and ended their season 23-6 last season.
“We’re focused on getting better again this week, and excepting another great football game next weekend,” said Mowrey. “We’re happy to able to practice another week.”
