Grove City scored 33 unanswered points and ran their record to 5-0 on the season with a 33-7 victory of rival Slippery Rock.
“We knew coming down here it was going to be a physical football game,” said Grove City head coach Sam Mowrey. “Slippery Rock is going to battle, and they’re a good football team.”
Tyler Greer ran for three second-quarter touchdowns to give the Eagles a comfortable cushion at halftime up 27-7. While the Rockets fell apart turning the ball over six times including five lost fumbles. Greer rushed for 51 yards on 11 carries to lead Grove City’s ground game.

“That was big for us in the second quarter, especially towards the end of the half. We force a turnover and are able to turn that into points when they were driving,” said Mowery.
“They got two touchdowns off of turnovers there, and those things are going to come back and get you against good teams,” said Slippery Rock head coach Larry Wendereusz. “I said that last week, that against good teams you can’t turn the ball over. Turning the ball over six times, you’re never going to beat a good football team doing that.”
The talent of the Eagles seniors Brady Callahan and Logan Lutz was on full display again Friday night as the two hooked five times for 142 yards.
“It’s our rivalry game, and we both were just playing as hard as we can,” said Lutz. “We ran the ball, and that opened up some big plays down the field in the passing game that helped us.”
Lutz would also have the three forced fumbles in the game, the first of which led to Greer’s second touchdown that put Grove City ahead 21-7.
“It was huge for our momentum; we able to capitalize on that, and our line did a great job all night long,” said Lutz. “They came out with a lot of fire, but we knew what we had to do – we just had to execute our jobs, and we were able to make it happen.”
Lutz would add 23 yards rushing, Callahan chipped in with 20 yards on five attempts and touchdown which tied the game at seven on a 9-yard run.
“They have great chemistry together and do a great job,” said Mowery. “I think one of the biggest things is that you can’t focus on just one person, because we have other kids that do a great job of making plays. It’s all about everybody doing their job and working together.”
Slippery Rock had opened the scoring after the Rockets defense held on fourth down as quarterback Vito Pilosi scored on a 3-yard keeper. But Rockets could only muster 179 yards of total offense.

Grove City only turned two of those turnovers into points. However, the Eagles offense scored on all three second-quarter possessions by Greer. First of which came on a 9-yard run following a Rockets fumble. He then rushed for three and 11-yard scores in the final two minutes of the first half.
Lutz would go on to add a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the game’s only second-half touchdown.
“Just the physicality and their mentality tonight were great,” said Mowrey. “But there are always things we can improve on. We had too many penalties tonight and put ourselves behind the sticks a few times. Those are things we need to address and work on moving forward.”
For Slippery Rock, they drop their second straight game and will try to rebound next week at Titusville.
“We want kids to go make plays, the last thing you want to do is yell and scream at them,” said Wendereusz. “We’re trying to encourage our kids to make plays if you miss it – we’ll live with it and get another shot. The first three games we did that, tonight we didn’t.”
