Chestnut Ridge Lions @ Richland Rams Friday October 25, 2019

Just like last year the Richland-Chestnut Ridge game would decide the Laurel Highlands Championship.

Just like last year, Richland is 9-0 and Chestnut Ridge is 8-1.

Just like last year Chestnut Ridge was 8-0 and lost in week #9 to Bishop Guilfoyle.

Just like last year Richland is the #1 ranked AA team in district 6.

Just like last year Chestnut Ridge is the #1 ranked AA team in district 5.

Last year Richland won 24-20.

The Laurel Highlands Champion is …..

That’s where the similarities stopped. Richland totally dominated Chestnut Ridge on the way to a 51-7 victory.

The Rams won the toss and deferred. The Lions return the short kickoff to their 41. Three running plays later it was 4th and 2 and they called timeout to discuss the situation. The 1st big play of the game was made by Richland who broke up the 4th down pass. The Rams went 49 yards in 5 plays scoring on a 27 yard TD pass from Kellan Stahl to Jordan Ford. (7-0 Rams) The Lions punted on their next possession facing a 4th and 5 at their own 44. The Lions then got the first of 2 interceptions on tipped passes. The Lions went 50 yards to tie the game. The big play a 37 yard scramble by Logan Pfister on 3rd down. Pfister scored from 2 yards out at 4:51 of the 1st.

Richland was forced to punt on their next possession. Chestnut Ridge starting at their own 30 drove for almost 7 minutes overcoming a sack and a 4th and 2. Richland finally forced a 4th and 13 from their 34 and Pfister threw incomplete.  The Rams drove into Lions territory but another tipped pass ended that drive. Chestnut Ridge ran 3 plays and punted from their own 25. The game changed for good when senior Caleb Burke returned the punt to the Lion 21. Richland scored at 3:09 on a 5 yard pass from Stahl to Burke. (14-7 Rams) The Lions next drive, lasted two plays and ended on a Griffin Larue interception at midfield. A holding call put the Rams back in their own territory. But Stahl hit Burke on a 64 yard TD with 1:51. (21-7 Rams) The Lions went 3 and out. Richland using their timeouts to get the ball back. Richland’s drive was then only stopped by the clock. (Halftime)

The Rams exploded to start the 3rd quarter. Not wanting to kick deep to Caleb Burke, the Lions kicked short and watched Grayden Lewis run left then right then for a 65 yard TD on the kickoff. Seventeen seconds into the 2nd half and it was 28-7 Rams. The Lions went 3 and out as Pfister was sacked again. Richland scored again after a long run, Stahl to Burke from 14. (Rams 34-7) The Lions drove into Ram territory on their next possession, the big play a 27 yard Pfister run. But on 4th and 1 Richland stuffed the option at their own 20. The next play was a short pass from Stahl to Lewis who ran 80 yards this time for his 2nd TD. The Rams went for the two point conversion and Stahl hit Koby Bailey to start the mercy rule at 1:54 of the 3rd.(42-7 Rams) Richland added two scores in the 4th quarter.
