This was a crucial conference game for both Belle Vernon and West Mifflin. This game likely decided who would get a first round home game. “It’s another home game, a game for our seniors to play at the beach” said Coach Humbert. West Mifflin had a good opening drive to start the game. They were in Belle Vernon territory but unfortunately they had to punt it away when the drive stalled.
Belle Vernon started its first drive at their own 4 yard line. It was a great long drive. Eventually they would score. The drive was 14 plays and was finished off on a Jared Hartman 3 yard run. The touchdown was scored as time expired in the first quarter. That made it 7-0 Belle Vernon.
West Mifflin got the ball back again to start the second quarter but it was a three and out for the Titans. Belle Vernon had good field position for their second drive of the game, starting at the West Mifflin 48 yard line.
Later in the drive a run by Mason Pascoe gave Belle Vernon first and goal at the 6 yard line. After another Pascoe run that resulted in zero yards an unfortunate injury occurred when quarterback Jared Hartman kept the ball and got hit hard. Hartman had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. “The kid who is the leader of everything he truly is the leader” said Coach Humbert. That’s how big off a loss it was. When play resumed Mason Pascoe would score his first touchdown of the game on a 5 yard run. “It became get that win for that kid” said Coach Humbert. After the game Coach Humbert gave an update on Hartman who said, “I think he dislocated his knee, some of the halftime reports we got we don’t think it is that bad” Humbert also says “He’ll be back, it is a matter of what week he returns”.
Down 14-0 now, West Mifflin needed to get something going on offense. They did just that when Matthew Schuster connected with Bryant Johnson for a beautiful 15 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was missed which made it 14-6 Belle Vernon at the half.
Midway through the third quarter Belle Vernon extended their lead on a second touchdown run by Mason Pascoe this one for 3 yards. Pascoe had a big night for Belle Vernon carrying the ball 31 times for 206 yards. “Mason’s the guy we always want to get the ball to, we really felt like he was always just a hair away from scoring” said Coach Humbert. That touchdown run made the score 21-6 at the end of the third quarter.
Early on in the 4th quarter West Mifflin got on the board again, it was a 3 yard run by Parrish Parker. They went for 2 but the conversion failed making the score 21-12.
Belle Vernon would add one last touchdown to end the game making the final score 28-12.
Matt Schuster of West Mifflin had a good passing game who was 6 of 10 for 146 yards. Next week Belle Vernon hosts Plum in a non conference game and West Mifflin will travel to play Ringgold.
