The field general of McKeesport Area’s new-look spread offense will be continuing his career in the Mid-American Conference.
Eddie Stockett, a 6’4, 210-pound quarterback for the WPIAL rep Tigers, issued a verbal declaration to Akron Tuesday, according to national recruiting service Scout.com.
Through his recruiting process, Stockett amassed a pair of offers – the aforementioned Zips and Rutgers – and had drawn interest from programs like Connecticut, Boston College, Illinois, Michigan State, Northwester, Penn State, Pitt, Purdue, Stanford and West Virginia, among others.
The Tiger field general becomes the school’s second athlete to issue a preseason declaration to a Division-1 FBS program. The other was LB Hodari Christian, who declared to West Virginia.
Stockett is ranked by Scout.com as the No. 93 quarterback in the 2013 class and has a two-star rating. The McKeesport senior-to-be is joined in the rankings by Damion Terry (Erie Cathedral Prep, No. 27), Chavas Rawlins (Monessen, No. 58), Thomas Woodson (Gateway, No. 76), Kyle Yocum (Exeter Township, No. 83), Austin Wilson (East Pennsboro, No. 88), Alex Krivda (Pennridge, No. 98) and Michael Keir (Roman Catholic, No. 102).
One of the key offensive catalysts for the Tigers last season, Stockett completed 105-of-192 passes (54.7 percent) for 1,772 yards and 17 touchdowns against six interceptions while adding 136 yards and six touchdowns on 60 carries. He has thrown for 2,471 yards in his career for McKeesport.
The Tigers finished 6-4 in 2011, reaching the opening round of the WPIAL AAAA playoffs opposite Erie McDowell.
