Game 2 Huntingdon Bearcats (1-0) vs Bellefonte Red Raiders(1-0)
Week 2 of the high school slate and already a huge match-up in the Mountain League between the co-champions last season. The Bearcats begin their home slate this week after a 40-0 victory over cross-county rival Mt. Union. The Red Raiders are coming off a 17-14 victory at Jersey Shore last Friday night. Last year Huntingdon won a wild 52-31 game that featured 2 special teams returns and an interception return for the Bearcats.
The Offense: Last week the offense showed what may be in store for this year. Senior QB Andrew Hudy continued where he left of last year completing 7 of 12 passes for 189 yards and 3 TD’s to three different receivers. His main target was Senior running back Draven Zook who had 4 catches for 90 yards. Junior wideout Andrew Miller was the deep threat catching one pass, but that one pass went for 65 yards and a score. Some answers were provided in the running game as Senior Ryder Kocik was called on 12 to carry the football. He along with Zook were the leading ground gainers for a Huntingdon offense that amassed over 300 yards of offense. Jr. Nick Troha saw work in the passing game and running game as well. Sr Jake Wagner was on the PUP list for the game as he was un-able to play due to injury. His status for this week is unknown.
The Defense: I said last week that this unit has a chance to be a real force this season and against the Trojans, the Bearcat defense took a profound step in that direction. The Mt. Union attack was limited to 89 total yards of offense (77 rushing and 12 passing) as the Bearcat’s suffocated them all night long. Huntingdon recorded 12 tackles for loss (Isaiah Reed and Draven Zook with 3 each), 2 sacks (Andrew Finkle and Myles Baney) and 2 interceptions (Andrew Miller and Chandler Lauer). Mt. Union finished the game with 6 first downs and were 0-9 in third down conversions.
Special Teams: The special teams unit really did not come in to play much during last week’s lop-sided victory. Gio Scaccia was the 4-5 on extra points and averaged 46.5 yards per kickoff. Hudy handled the punting job and averaged 32.4 yards on 5 punts with 2 of those landing inside the 20 yard line.
The Opponent: Bellefonte will come to War Vets Field with a bit of a sour taste in their mouth from last season’s loss. That loss was their only one in league play last season. Last week the Red Raiders travelled to Jersey Shore and one on a last second field goal against a very tough Bulldog squad. RB CJ Funk ran for 110 yards and both Red Raider scores in the contest while new QB Kyle Myers fumbled 4 times in the first half and was pulled in the 3rd quarter for Logan Houser. Myers returned in the 4th to lead the winning drive. The Red Raider gave up 231 yards rushing last week to the Bulldogs.
Game Notes: The Bearcats have won 4 out of the last 5 games against the Red Raiders. With last weeks victory, Huntingdon now has amassed 691 wins and sits 9 away from breaking into the exclusive 700 win club.
