They call him “Tank”. It’s an appropriate nickname. He’s built like one. A very fast tank. The 5-8 and 205 pound senior is an old school offensive coordinators dream that fits into todays fast paced, high octane game. Smith isn’t afraid to run straight through the line and hit someone. Quite often he leaves them in his dust as he heads downfield. Like several others this off season, he was targeted by Howard head coach Brennan Marion, a native of the Wpial who played for Greensburg Central Catholic then later coached at Waynesburg University. Smith joined Penn Hills teammate qb Hollis Mathis in committing to the Bison
We caught up with Tank and asked him about his commitment:
WPA: why did you choose The Bison?
Tank: I Chose HU Because It Just Felt Like Home. I Felt like i belonged There.
WPA: who was your biggest influence at Howard, who recruited you?
Tank: My Biggest Influences Were My Qb Hollis, Coach Marion, And Just My Mom Telling Me alot About The School Because Her Bestfriend Went There And She Uses To Visit Alot.
WPA: what do your parents think of your decision?
Tank: My Parents Are Very Happy About My Decision. HU Is A Very Prestigious School.
WPA: what are they getting in player like you?
Tank: They Are Getting One Of The Smartest Football Players In The country. A Player That Can Play Any Skilled Position On The Field. A Winner, A Leader, And A Pure Ball Player. A Hard Worker Who Always Wants To Get Better And Do What It Takes To Make My Team Better.
WPA: what position will you play?
Tank: Im Going To Play Tailback
WPA: why commit early?
Tank: I Originally Planned To Commit After The Season After I Got Some Bigger Offers. But I Figured Why Wait? Howard Is A Great HBCU And They Want Me Now. They Showed They Believed In Me Since Day 1 By Offering Me After My Sophomore Year
WPA: Do you know what you’d like to study?
Tank: No Not Yet. Probably Sports Management, Or Communications. I Like Cooking Though I May want To Do Something In Culinary Arts.
WPA: What do you think is the most exciting thing about Howard University?
Tank: The Most Exciting Thing About Howard Is To Me The Culture. I Cant Wait To Experience Just The Culture Of An HBCU.
WPA: How will this affect your play for your senior season?
Tank: I Think It Will Let Me Focus On The Season And Just Playing Football. No Recruiting, No Politics. Just Football. And That Has Me Really Excited Going Into The Season Knowing I Can Now Just Focus On Leading My Team To A State Championship.
