Penns Valley Wears Down Punxsutawney in Comeback Win

Sometimes a scoreboard doesn’t always tell the whole story. This one says how resilient the home team was to get the win. When you’re trailing by 11 points late in the third quarter and you’re playing an opponent that returned a majority of their team that’s expected to be a pretty good football team, there’s just one thing you can do. Turn a 6’5, 270 defensive lineman loose.

Jacob Duffield had 2 huge sacks that were key drive stoppers in the fourth quarter after senior running back Blaine Ripka scored the go ahead touchdown with 9:26 left in the fourth quarter. “He is a kid who plays with a lot of heart and a lot of passion, he put it all out there tonight” said Rams head coach Marty Tobias.

Chucks quarterback Dylan Ishman got the scoring going in the first quarter with a nice 11 yard td pass to running back Stone Smith for the early 7-0 game. “He’s a playmaker and we expected to get that kind of play out of him” said Chucks head coach Brad Wright.  Penns Valley answered right back with a quick 8 play, 69 yard drive that ended with Ripka’s first score of the game, a 2 yard run.

Chucks RB Tyler Richardson made it 13-7 when Ishman hit him for and 11 yard score with 9:32 to go in the second quarter. “Tyler is a really good player and and we’re extremely happy he came out to play for us” said Wright. Richardson had a fantastic night catching the ball out of the backfield. The senior had 6 catches for 97 yards and a td.

On the ensuing drive, Punxsy made a fantastic goal line stand and just stuffed the Rams rb at the line and took over at the 1. But a mistake in play calling  would cost them. Duffield and Matthew Tobias stuffed Stone Smith in the endzone for a safety. “That was a pretty big play for us going in to half time” said an overly excited Tobias after the game. “Just gotta keep fighting all game long.”

With the Score 13-9 in favor of the Chucks, the Rams went on a drive to open the second half. It looked like they were on the move, going to a hurry up offense to try and catch the Chucks off balance. Robert Stormer stepped in front of a Justin Sands pass and Punxsutawney took advantage driving 54 yards to make it a 21-10 lead. Ishman found Alexander Giavito for his second td pass of the night.

Then came the momentum changer: The Ram defense blocked a punt and the ball rolled out of bounds at the 2 yard line. Ripka carried it in for a 4 yard td to make it a 21-16 game and the momentum had completely changed. “It was huge; plays like that they can change a game and tonight it did” said Tobias.  Soon after, Aaron Tobias, who filled in for Sand in spots to give him a rest because he plays hard on both sides of the ball, made the biggest offensive play of the night. He found Cole Breon and the jr wide receiver did the rest, chewing up 51 yards to get the Rams to the one. Ripka got the go ahead score with 9:26 remaining in the game. The Penns Valley defense did the rest, stuffing the Chucks 3 more times to end the game.
