Preseason report – Dubois Area
Written by: Grant Long on Thursday, August 22nd, 2013
Football season is here again and the DuBois Area High School Beaver football team is hard at work preparing for the up coming season. The DuBois squad has some rebuilding to do after losing so many star seniors. One of the biggest questions is who will replace Running Back Garrett Brown? Brown, scoring 27 touchdowns and rushing for over 1,600 yards last season, will be difficult to replace.
“Garrett was a special athlete…and we probably won’t be as explosive from the running back position…” says Head Coach Frank Varischetti, “but Devin Clark will step in and will fill in admirably.” Junior RB Devin Clark appeared in 7 games, rushed for 23 yards, and scored 3 touchdowns last season for the Beavers and is showing great potential in camp.
Junior Wide Receiver Bryson Paulinellie is also looking to be a key offensive option for the Beavers. Paulinellie received for 446 yards and scored 10 touchdowns for DuBois last season averaging a little under 50 yards per game. “Our whole receiving crew is new except for Bryson Paulinellie. I really like throwing to them.” says Junior QB Gabe French. Senior LB Mike Marsh also commented,“Bryson Paulinellie is definitely putting in work for the receiving spot.” Look for Paulinellie and Clark to be moving the ball a lot more this season.
The Beavers are doing something different for week 6 this year. Instead of having a bye week October 4th, the team is traveling to Morgantown, West Virginia to play the Morgantown High School Mohigans. The Mohigans, who play in a league based out of Ohio, were ranked 5th in the state last season. A lot of the players for DuBois are looking forward to the game. “I’m really excited for that game…” says Senior Offensive and Defensive lineman Tyler Fleeger. “… It’s going to be a tough game verses a tough opponent.” Senior kicker Isaac Kunselman commented, “ I think it will be cool to try something new. They are a good team and we are a good team too.” This game promises to be exciting, intense and a true battle for both sides. DON’T MISS IT!!!
There is a lot in store for the 2013 DuBois Beavers this season. It should be exciting to see how the team fairs with so many young players. Junior QB Gabe French noted, “People have said that this is the team that will get us deep in the playoffs, the seniors have skill, the sophomores have skill, the juniors have skill and we are all coming together to make a great team.” The Beavers face off against the Mifflin County Huskies week one at home at E.J. Mansel Stadium.
