Sharon throttles Karns City to advance in state playoffs

Written by: on Saturday, November 18th, 2017

One year ago Karns City surprised many as they knocked off the #1 team in the state (Hickory) in this very round.

The Sharon Tigers made sure that wasn’t happening again. Sharon dominated in all aspects of the game while averaging 11.3 yards-per-play and rolled up 67 points in a route of the Gremlins.

“They just executed and played very well, they hit us with some big plays, and we could never recover,” said Karns City head coach Ed Conto. “We just could get out of our own way, not just this game, but all year long.”

Ziyon Strickland, Jordan Wilson, and Lane Voytik did most of the damage for the Tigers.

Strickland scored three touchdowns and recorded 163 yards of total offense, while Wilson also scored three touchdowns adding 168 yards rushing. Voytik threw for 195 yards and four touchdowns.

Early on things looked for the Gremlins as they forced the Tigers to punt on their opening possession.

After that, it was all Sharon.

Strickland hauled in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Voytik to open the scoring midway through the opening quarter.

Sharon extended their lead to 14-0 after a quarter as Strickland scored on a 4-yard run capping off a 9-play 63-yard drive.

The two teams then went on to score four touchdowns 98 seconds in a wild second stanza.

Wilson scored his first touchdown on a 37-yard run at the 7:07 mark. Tristan Ballard then intercepted an Anthony Kamenski pass and 1-play later Voytik, and C.j Parchman hooked up for a 23-yard touchdown.

Karns City was able to briefly stop the bleeding as Dalton Beham ran 76 yards on the ensuing play from scrimmage.

Sharon then said whatever you can do; I can do better as Voytik and Strickland hooked up for 75 yards on their ensuing play that pushed the lead to 33-7.

Following Ballard’s second interception of the game, Voytik and Parchman connected on a 37-yard touchdown pass.

Strickland then intercepted Kamenski and returned the ball deep into Gremlins’ territory at the 6-yard line where Wilson scored on the next snap that invoked the PIAA’s mercy-rule at the half.

“I don’t know what team that was in the first-half, we are so much better than that,” said Conto.

Dalton Beham led all rushers with 189 yards and a score on just 15 carriers.

“He ran hard on every carry out there,” Conto said. “We didn’t block at the point attack very well tonight, but the kids ran hard.”

His 50-yard gain led to Garing’s 29-yard field goal to open the second-half.

When asked if he thought the game would be like this, Sharon head coach Jim Wildman replied “No.” “I thought it would be a high scoring game, but our defense rose to the occasion; our offense was just clicking.”

Three plays later Wilson scored from 39 yards out.

“Our offensive line played very strong, and they were getting to the second level,” said Wildman.

Brady Ortiz and Keyshawn Barnett also scored second-half touchdowns for Sharon. Ortiz on a 65-yard fumble return and Barnett on a 4-yard rush.

Anthony Kamenski scored the Gremlins final touchdown of the season from nine yards out in the fourth quarter.

“I thought we could have played better,” said Conto. “Our kids played hard to the end, but it’s still a very difficult way to end the season.”
