In a complete second-half turnaround Slippery Rock out-scored Harbor Creek 31-0 and turned a 14-7 halftime deficit into a 38-14 victory to advance in the District 10 Class AAA Playoffs Saturday night at Fairview High School.
“Tonight we did a lot of the same things only out of different formations. Our kids were then a little more comfortable,” said Slippery Rock head coach Larry Wendereusz said. “In the second half, our defense came out and played; they knew what was at stake and in that first half, it wasn’t our best showing defensively. They really played well in the second half, they flew around, and they were hard-hitting.”
Jacob Shaffer collected 184 yards of total offense and threw three touchdowns while the Rocket’s defense limited the Huskies to just two second-half first downs and forced four turnovers in the final two quarters.
Shaffer, who started the game 0-for-7 passing; went 7-for-17 for 116 yards with the three scores in the second half, he also rushed for 42 in the half and had 68 in the game.
“I knew what I had to do and knew what I was coached to do, so I just went out there and played quarterback,” said Shaffer. “After we got that tying touchdown there was so much energy we knew we were in the game again and it just lifted everyone’s spirits.”
The Rockets tied the game on their opening possession of the third quarter as Shaffer went 5-for-6 and tossed a 13-yard touchdown to Seth Slater.
Slippery Rock then took the lead for good on their next possession as Jonah Foster intercepted Huskies quarterback Jaxson Favre and the Rockets moved 37 yards in five plays as Shaffer and Nate Hyatt connected for a 21-yard score.
“Jake had a great game throwing the ball tonight he made some great throws and reads out there,” said Wendereusz.
In a bizarre turn of events, the Rockets forced Harbor Creek to punt and took over at their 34-yard line. Failing on a 4th-and-goal from the Huskies 2-yard line as Shaffer came up a yard short; two plays later faced with a 2nd-and-10 at their 1-yard line Favre tried to run a keeper where the ball was stripped and recovered by Hyatt for a touchdown.
Although that wasn’t nearly as strange what occurred on the ensuing kickoff as Tony Langer-Williamson did not attempt to field the kickoff with Slippery Rock recovering it at the Huskies 9-yard line.
Nate Willison would then connect on a 22-yard field that pushed the lead to 31-14.
Langer-Williamson may have gotten confused thinking it was punt as the Rockets had been penalized for kicking the ball out of bounds on the prior attempt.
Another Huskies turnover led to Shaffer’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Rod Williams that pushed the lead to 38-14.
Harbor Creek scored the game’s the first touchdown as Zach Mosbacher pounded it in from four yards out. The touchdown came after the Huskies were forced to punt, but a running into the kicker penalty gave them another shot and Favre connected with Cody Smith for a 26-yard gain setting them up at the Rockets 4-yard line.
Slippery Rock would answer when Slater scored his first touchdown from 6 yards out tying the game a seven.
Favre scored on 1-yard plunge following a blocked punt that gave the Huskies a 14-7 lead at halftime.
Lee Barney led Harbor Creek with 69 yards on 17 carriers.
