Small School Team # 2 Aliquippa (7) 0-0

Written by: on Thursday, August 30th, 2012

The highest-ranked AA team in this poll, the Quips return quite the impressive nucleus from a 2011 edition which finished 14-1 overall, claimed the program’s 14th WPIAL football championship and earned a berth in the PIAA semifinals opposite Tyrone. Granted, Aliquippa loses its quarterback, three-year starter and 4,000-yard career passer Mikal Hall, but the Quips are not lacking in the offensive backfield.

A pair of juniors – Dravon Henry and Terry Swanson – finished as the Quips’ leading rushers last season. Henry ran for 1,497 yards and Swanson 946, and both will be among the primary focal points once again. Add in RB/LB Devon Walker, the hero in the WPIAL championship game who caught the game-winning touchdown pass against Jeannette, TE/DL Donovan Cobb, OL/DLs Emmanuel Williams, Jaleel Fields and Khalil Seaburn, LB Celo Davis and DBs Malik Shegog and Jyier Turner, and you’ve got quite a formidable group expected to contend not only for another WPIAL crown, but also possibly a PIAA title as well. The Quips’ defense allowed all of three passing touchdowns in 15 games last year and only two opponents scored more than 14 points in a game against them. Overall, Aliquippa outscored its opponents by an average of 27 points per game and recorded four shutouts.
