One of the WPIAL’s top returning wide receivers will continue his collegiate football career in the Mid-American Conference.
Zach Challingsworth, a 6’2, 180-pound wide receiver/defensive back for South Fayette High School, issued a verbal declaration to Toledo Monday night, according to national recruiting services Scout.com and Rivals.com.
The Lions’ senior-to-be held a total of six scholarship offers, including the Rockets. Akron, Buffalo, Kent State, Ohio and Temple had also extended offers to Challingsworth, who also generated interest from programs like Connecticut, Maryland, Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin, among others.
Challingsworth becomes the second Keystone State wide receiver in the 2013 class to issue a preseason college declaration, joining Will Fuller (Roman Catholic, Penn State). Challingsworth was not a nationally ranked prospect by either Scout or Rivals.
A Pennsylvania Sportswriters’ Class AA All-State selection and a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette all-Century Conference at wide receiver in 2012, Challingsworth proved quite an important piece in the Lions’ third consecutive berth in the WPIAL AA quarterfinals. He hauled in a team-best 48 passes for 704 yards and nine touchdowns and added 250 yards rushing and one touchdown on 36 carries, averaging 6.9 yards per carry and 14.7 yards per reception. He also handled South Fayette’s punting chores and picked off five passes on defense.
The Lions finished 7-4 overall, reaching the WPIAL quarterfinals for the third consecutive season before bowing to Seton-LaSalle. Over the last three seasons, South Fayette is 32-6 overall (.842).
