Sto-Rox fans were worried about drawing such a strong opponent to start their playoff run. The Vikings got the ball to start the game and they really couldn’t get that much going and didn’t get it out to midfield, but their defense got things rolling for them on the scoreboard, and never let up on the Jayhawks to help lead them to a 15-6 win in the opening round of the WPIAL 1A playoffs.

Jeannette’s first possession started at their own 37 yard line. On third and long they threw the ball and it was tipped and intercepted by Brennan Harris for a 32 yard touchdown. “He just made the best play of his career, unbelievable play man, kinda got us going in the right direction” said Coach Johnson. That made it 7-0 with 8 minutes in the first quarter.

On Jeannette’s second possession they moved the ball. A run by James Sanders got Jeannette past midfield. After another run by Imani Sanders they were at the Sto-Rox 33. After that the drive stalled and they decided to punt and pin them deep.

Sto-Rox started at their own 7 yard line. After a pass they got some breathing room with a first down at the 20. The drive didn’t result in much and they punted the ball away.

The next couple of drives were 3 and outs one of them was 1 play and the ball was intercepted. The score at the end of 1 was 7-0 Sto-Rox. In the second quarter they extended their lead on a safety which made it 9-0 with 6:47 left before half.

Toward the end of the half Jeannette started a drive at their own 7. The drive featured several big passes one of which was 25 yards which got them to the Sto-Rox 42. And after a run they were at the 12 yard line. After that the defense stood tall a run on first down went no where and they ended up going for it on fourth down and a pass fell incomplete. “The kids just absolutely played hard, I’m just so proud of the team” said Coach Johnson.

The score at halftime was 9-0. Jeannette started with the ball to start the second half. They failed to get past midfield and punted the ball away.

Late in the quarter Sto-Rox started a drive at the 10 yard line. After a first down at the 24 the ball was intercepted and Jeannette had a golden opportunity starting at the Sto-Rox 36. It took several plays but they did eventually get into the end zone on a 3 yard run by Imani Sanders. That score occurred with 47 seconds left the third and the extra point was missed making the score 9-6 at the end of 3.

Jeannette got their chances to take the lead but they just couldn’t get anything going against the Sto-Rox defense.

Sto-Rox came up with a response to extend their lead back to 9 on a 6 yard run by Zay Davis. He also had a big play that set up that score which was a 41 yard pass from Eric Wilson down to the Jeannette 13. “It’s always about how you respond to adversity” said Coach Johnson. Wilson had a good night he was 15 of 25 for 153 yards.

The play that sealed the victory was on the next Jeannette drive when the ball was intercepted. The final score ended up being 15-6 Sto-Rox.

Next week Sto-Rox plays West Greene for the right to go to Heinz Field at a location to be determined.
