Some around Pennsylvania may be non-plussed by Johnstown’s regular season schedule, which is comprised entirely of Class A and AA opponents in the Laurel Highlands Conference. The Trojans, however, might wind up being one of the stronger AAA teams in the sparse population of big school football programs spread between Districts 4, 6 and 9, and have a legitimate chance to reach the PIAA quarterfinals this year if the stars properly align for the black and blue.
Quarterback Gervon Simon (120-of-223, 2,338 yds, 30 TD; 108 rush, 659 yds, 11 TD) returns to highlight Johnstown’s offensive arsenal. Simon is on pace for more than 4,000 passing yards in just two seasons as a varsity quarterback, a feat accomplished only once prior in District 6 history (Jordan Defrances, Bishop McCort, 4,175 yds, 2006-07). Joining Simon in the backfield would likely be a combination of Tim Odum and Javon Vuckovich (combined 90 rush, 372 yds, 3 TD in ’10), and a bevy of receivers in Dwight Andrews (25 rec., 623 yards, 7 TD), Alkwan Williams (25, 516, 8), Daquan Minter (21, 447, 5) and Marc Waston (26, 370, 5). Three key contributors along the offensive line – Larry Blackner, Brock Eisenhooth and Michael Brooks – return as well to help pave the way for a Trojan offensive unit which averaged 387.3 yards (185.6 rush, 201.7 pass) and 34.2 points per game last year.
Defensively, Johnstown will be aided by the following returnees: Pitt recruit Williams (137 tackles, 5 sacks), Vuckovich (69 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 FF), Eisenhooth (48 tackles, 2 sacks), Luke Kmett (42 tackles, 3 FR), Minter (41 tackles, 3 INT, 7 PD), Dalvin Williams (33 tackles – 20 solo), Malcolm Harris (30 tackles – 24 solo – 1 INT) and Watson (17 tackles, 3 INT), but will miss the presence of defensive back Calvin Anderson, who intercepted a team-best 11 passes.
