Head coach Ron Butschle’s first year of his second stint at Sto-Rox High School yielded a 7-3 season and berth in the WPIAL A playoffs opposite Pittsburgh North Catholic. But simply getting a berth in the WPIAL playoffs won’t be good enough for the green and white this year. The Vikings boast a trio of Division-1 prospects in defensive backs Marzett Geter (Pitt recruit) and Dontez Ford (Syracuse recruit) and Deaysean Rippy, one of the nation’s top linebackers, holds numerous offers from programs all over the country.
Quarterback Lenny Williams threw for 1,370 yards last season, believed to be the most passing yards by a WPIAL freshman quarterback, but Williams could get a test from senior Jordan Latimer, who was rock solid as a back-up to Paul Jones two years ago, throwing for 643 yards and six scores without an interception in three starts. Latimer missed almost all of last season with a torn ACL. Featured running back Josh Beverly scored 12 touchdowns last season (finished as the Vikings’ leading scorer) and Rippy and Geter each surpassed the 500-yard receiving mark.
Sto-Rox allowed an average of 11.6 points per game last season defensively. Will the Vikings be able to get past the quarterfinal round of the WPIAL playoffs? Class A has some tough teams, like Clairton, Rochester and Springdale out there vying for a Heinz Field berth, too.
