It’s all about sharing the wealth up in Edinboro – General McLane finished the 2010 season with 15 different players registering a carry, six total players with at least one reception and seven players who scored at least seven touchdowns. It all added up to a 10-2 season and berth in the District 10 AA semifinals, the third straight season McLane has reached the D10 semifinals. But each trip has ended in a loss – to eventual PIAA champion Wilmington in 2008; to Sharon in 2009; and to Hickory last season. In GM’s three seasons since dropping down to the AA class, the Lancers are 30-6 overall (.833).
Offensively, GM scored 60 total touchdowns in its flexbone offense (49 rushing, 11 passing), and return several key skill position players from a unit which averaged 39.4 points per game. Field general Josh Ponsoll amassed 1,567 yards of offense (884 pass, 683 rush) and accounted for 18 total touchdowns. Joining Ponsoll are backs Matt Astorino (56 rush, 709 yards, 7 TD); Chad Kulka (98, 584, 9); Brian Suminski (73, 442, 7); and reserve back Tyler Hendricks (36, 223, 1). GM averaged 323.6 rushing yards per game last season. The top returning receiver from the Lancers’ aerial assault is junior tight end Quinn Thompson (6 rec., 198 yds, 4 TD). Thompson also ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries.
Defensively, McLane returns Astorino, Thompson, Kulka and Ponsoll, but loses key players like Zach Lucas, Travis Bryant and Derek Schultz. Kicker David Olszewski (52 PATs, three field goals) also graduated.
