It’s easy to look on paper at defending WPIAL AA champion South Fayette and wonder if there’s any gas left in the tank from last year’s high-octane offensive attack led by record-setting quarterback Christian Brumbaugh. Brumbaugh’s 3,728 passing yards and 52 touchdowns were impressive, as was the Lions’ receiving corps (five athletes with 25+ receptions) and 1,500-yard rusher Jeff Davis.
In all, the Lions scored 87 total offensive touchdowns (52 passing, 35 rushing) and averaged 40.3 points per game. So, with the likes of Brumbaugh, Davis, Tanner Courtad, Josh Patterson, Eric Myers, Tyler Challingsworth, Nolan Spicer and Nick Faraci all departed, it would be easy to ask, “What’s left?” The answer: a little more than what meets the eye. Three returning starters from the offensive line – Sean Lacinski, Nick Guyan and Keith Hitlan – return, and fullback/linebacker combination Trevor Fiorentini scored 11 rushing touchdowns and also was a key defensive presence, too.
One of the leading 2010 receivers, junior Zach Challingsworth, hauled in 41 passes for 867 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging more than 21 yards per reception. Backup quarterback John Lerda acounted for 261 yards of total offense in limited action and scored a rushing touchdown and reserve running back Derek Yanosick ran for 170 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries.
Defensively, Guyan and Hitlan return on the line, Fiorentini returns at linebacker and junior Mike Fetchet provides a key presence in the SF defensive backfield. Kicker Tyler Yee scored 80 points last season, converting 77 PATs and one field goal.
